Supercharger
I have a Kawasaki Mule 2510 Diesel. Little 3cyl. naturally aspired diesel. I was wondering if I put a little electric fan in the in take would that be like a little supercharger?

Re:Supercharger
This thread got me thinking. No, I don't think adding a fan will do anything for you, and in fact may restrict the airflow. If a fan is to work it will probabaly have to be a big ducted fan. So then the question popped up in my small mind, how would one find out if any fan would work in this application? How does one easily measure the volume of air in the intake manifold? So here is a crazy Heath Robinson (Robertson?)suggestion. Get an old aircrcraft air speed indicator (ASI) from a wrecker and place the pitot tube in the manifold. That airspeed should give an indication of the amount of air going thru. Then place the pitot tube in the airstream of the fan you want to use. The indicated airspeed should be considerably higher for the fan to be effective as a supercharger.
OK you guys with more technical knowledge that I have: will this work as a rough indicator or am I all wet?

Re:Supercharger
On further thinking about this in the shower I had another idea. Maybe a boost gauge would work in lieu of the ASI. Just make your own pitot tube out of a piece of 3/16 pipe. Accuracy is not important, as these are just comparison figures.
Have no idea if this would work. Just throwing out a crazy spur of the moment suggestion. However, if anybody tries this, would love to hear the results.
Re:Supercharger
ASI works off static and pitot mexistan, your talking to a pilot now so I would have to say it would be a real bugger to get accurate readings with an aircraft ASI. You know there is a huge dependence on the lenghts of hoses and orfices and such in an airplan to make it all work accurately. I had my Dehavilland Beaver in the other day for a Pitot/Static probelm got a tiny piece of dust in there and made everything get screwy its pretty tough to accuratly measure the intake velocity with an ASI.

Re:Supercharger
The problem with your DHC 2 could have been in the static system. Also on the ASI system as used on the DHC 2 a bug such as a spider in the pitot can cause havoc. Waxing your aircraft and getting wax in the tiny static hole is an example of what can cause a problem in accurate reading. The crazy comparison I proposed is not dependant on a "balanced" system of pitot and static. Accuracy is not the factor here, only a comparisom measurment that has no relevancy to accuracy. Length and sizing of hoses is critical to an aircraft pitot/static system but would have no relevancy to the rough comparison test I proposed.
Well????
Re:Supercharger
Agreed with that the DHC2 did have a tiny bit of dust what a bugger eh! Oh well you are right if you plan on it with low margins of accuracy then your way will do just fine.

Re:Supercharger
Jamie, out of curiosity what is the S/N of your DHC 2 and what mods have been done, such as 3 blade prop and large baggage compartment?
