Stupid Snap Ring!!

Very simple, snap ring holding the silencer ring in the turbo. I've tried everything I know to get that thing out and I can't get it to even budge. It doesn't have holes in it so can't use snap-ring pliers. Can't get ahold of it with pliers in general or even get anything under it to raise it out of the groove. I got fed up and walked off and left it I feel stupid because I can't even get a simple snap ring out. How do yall do it!?

You have to look at it closely with a good flashlight. When you do you'll see that at the end of the ring it narrows down. Forget about snap ring pliers, you need two small flat blade screwdrivers. Pry up on the end of the ring with the screwdriver and work it out of the grove. Work your way around the groove with both screwdrivers and the snap ring should come out fairly easily:

Heres the "Official" instructions for removal:

Removal: "Remove the flex hose from the front of the turbo that goes to the breather. Just inside the turbo, you will see a snap ring that looks like a piston ring(charcoal color), very gently with a small flat blade screw driver, lift one end of the snap ring out of the groove, then continue to work around the snap ring, lifting it out of the groove. When the snap ring has been removed, you can easily remove the silence ring:

Had the same problem, wound up taking a sharpened punch to it between the intake housing and front face of the ring. Popped right out!

The snap ring has two ends \_\. Choose the end that goes like _\. Slide one screwdriver to lift the end and another to pry it out. Once I learned this, it only takes a second.

Angry **** Snap Ring is a Pain in the A$$

I tried everything too, My truck is now in the shop getting a 6" lift. I asked them to take it out for me, otherwise is it really worth it? I was afraid of damaging the aluminum.

.....OR....like on some of the newer CTD's, (Almost imposable to get out) just take a flat head screwdriver and drive it through the ring....bend it and pull it out and screw the snap ring.......wont hurt anything.....

Smile Snap Ring

Hey there,

It is a real pain in the butt. I have trouble to, but then use a Machinist’s scribe (looks like a piece of dental equipment) and I was able to get the pointed end underneath the snap ring and then get it out. Was not pretty, but effective.
My Best, Greg

Or you could just upgrade to a turbo like the ksb-1 that doesn't even come with a silencer ring.
