Street Turbo Info

Hello,

I've been doing some reading, trying to get as much information as I can about which turbo would be good for building up a quick/street truck. Currently I am running my stock HX35, but it is getting pretty old and I know it is going to go out sometime soon.

As far as my mods go, I am running:

BHAF
Stock 3" downpipe with 5" straight the rest of the way.
XZT+
Goerend Valve Body

I plan on working my way up to around 400HP and wanting a quick truck at the same time. I was looking at the S300, but I'm not sure if that would be a good choice or not?

All help is appreciated

what indications do you have that it's going to go out soon?

I'd do a 62mm S300

Starting to spit out more and more oil out the rear of the turbo and it's starting to get more and more play on the fins. It's just starting to get out/inwards play and has side to side (has for awhile). And it has been sending through a bit of oil the past half a year through the aftercooler/intake.

Would like to change it because I have seen what a blown turbo can do to an engine. And well yes, I want to upgrade as well

Garrett 3782R stage 2. Go with the oversized exhaust flange. Lots of turbo to grow with and spools wickly fast. They cost the same as the S300, and its a better turbo. A recent article in a turbo mag pushed the stage 3 to low 500's rwhp in a 3rd gen, so they work. Mine 3782 wastegate was set at 40 psi of boost, which is tons of air for your rig. If your bargan hunting, a HX-40 is a cheap up grade, just find one that has a 14cm housing. It will spool like the S300 and push similar amount of air.

Thanks Fellas.

Well I don't plan on towing hardly at all with the truck..those days are over for the old girl. And if I did happen to tow something, it wouldn't be more than a small trailer with a couple ATV's on it.

The Garrett 3782R stage 2 and the II SPS 62/14, are these similar turbo's, different housing sizes, stuff like that?

I'm hoping to replace the turbo and exhaust manifold within the next little while. So I am trying to read up and gain as much knowledge as possible

From what I can gather, the Garrett will flow a tiny bit less but spool a bunch sooner.

But that's just speculation on my part.

i took mikes advice and some other guys here and went with the garret seems to pull harder then stock in the low then shortly after hits hard. with my box cranked up it is a decent climb to 10psi then pegs 40psi fast. made 416 and 940 this past weekend, and my vp is a hurtin unit with 320km on it

get it from turboresoure if you do they have there own in house exhaust flanges that are way better then the garret stocker

Get a new pump on that thing! My truck rolled 499.2 with nearly the same setup.

Dinner, I would spend my 450 bucks elsewhere if your stock manifold is not cracked. Won't gain much going after market. Might as well port match your stock turbo with a die grinder or hours of work with a dremel tool.

Well my manifold is in horrible shape. Had it quickly welded up to try and see if it would hold last year, and this year it has cracked even worse. Soot all over the place...yea it's cracked badly, lol.

I also want to replace my turbo as well because it is starting to get a lot of play, has been putting a bit of oil through the aftercooler/intake for awhile, and is putting oil out behind the turbo as well

I have been looking around on some websites, and do you guys have anything good/bad to say about a turbo from Scheid?

Where is the best price on a garrett 3782? I've been looking at on of them, I tow alot and just can't give up the bottom end response of the stock type turbo. It looks like the stock 04.5 and up turbo would make a decent upgrade on a mild truck and a good towing setup with a external wastegate on twins.

I've been doing some more reading, and I'm thinking that a 62/13 or 62/14 would be a good chose for a street/drag truck? I've been looking around on HTT, II and Scheid. I'm still undecided of who to go with in regards to purchasing a turbo though. Is one company better than the others? I know Scheid is about $985 for a turbo, while the others are more than that.

I replaced my stock turbo with a Silver 62 and have been happy with it. It is definately laggy compared to the stock turbo but still is very driveable. I did have to learn to drive around the smoke when using higher level settings with Smarty or TST as it will roll the smoke until spooled up. I am hoping replacing injectors will help quicken the spool up and add some mor HP/Tq
Gwhammy,
What are the Turbo sizes for the stock 2004.5 turbo comapared to the stock turbo HX35? I think the SB62 is 62/14 cm housing with 74mm wheel.

I still have my stock turbo that was working great before putting the SB62 on?
