strait pipe, what does it do?

I have a 1994 4x4 ctd with 174,000 miles and I have been told that if I cut the muffler off it will improve the fuel economy and make it smoke more, give me more power, and not change the fuel economy. I don't really want to strait pipe it because I don't want it to sound like my 100hp Case tractor with a glass pack. So, will I see a difference with an exhaust upgrade and if so, what is recommended?

Straight pipe = more noise, slight performance and fuel economy improvements. It will not effect smoke. If you don't want it loud, don't straight pipe it. Get a 4" exhaust with a high flow muffler for the same improvements without the noise.

Straight pipe gives volume and little else. Most "improvements" are only on trucks with plugged cats where just a new cat would have fixed it.

Go 4" or stay stock.

It's the exact flip side, go 4" with a nice free flow muffler and it will sound like normal in the cab but like a N-14 cummins semi outside. In no way will it sound like a 100hp tractor with class packs

straight pipe lowers EGT and spools the turbo up quicker... removing the cat and putting a straight through muffler on does the same thing with less noise...

it ain't gonna sound like a 100hp case tractor, it's gonna sound GOOOOOOD!

Straight pipes are very loud it lowers egt's and helps with quicker spoolup but it is Loud Look into a 4 inch turbo to tailpipe system with a high flow muffler

I straight piped mine as soon as I bought it kept it that way until I was asleep one morning and my wife started my truck and it brought me out of a dead sleep. I thought no wonder my neighbors get mad at me geez! I ordered a muffler from Summit that day! I could tell little if any difference with or without the muffler. It did sound good though! I would have liked to heard it with my E brake on it straight piped.

Dinero is sort of tight around here so what is a cheap and quiet exhaust upgrade?

How cheap do you want? You can pick up a whole turbo back system for around $375-$450 with a muffler. I hear strait piping is around $30 $50 bucks. These are all do it yourself installs.

Where are you guys buying your Piping from for straight piping? I priced out some 5" Stainless Piping and it was something like $34 a foot. and regular piping was $9 or $10 a foot I think. Where is a cheap place to buy this ?

Well about 3-4 ft of regular pipe from NAPA should = about $30-40 bucks and a welder or pipe clamps to hook it all up. You must be talking about a full turbo back strait pipe system, i think you gota talk to Rip for that, that should run about $300-350

I ran into some 4 1/4 inch thick pipe that was used in a factory for what i dont know but it was free, went all the way up to where my stock exhaust goes to 3 1/2. bought a hanger and there ya go. Loud as hell, neighbors window for morning startups is just 8 feet away!!!!! That will teach him for parking his junk chevy truck with the gas leak closer to my place so we can smell gas sitting on the couch. Anyone for a cigarette??
