Stock turbo??

I have a 2001 3500, 24v. It had the stock turbo and it was going bad.. I was hoping to get it rebuilt but its taking too long and was wondering if a HX40 would work. I am not a machanic and do not know what the stock turbo was. Any help (education) would be appreciated. I was thinking about upgrading but not knowing what that involves and on a limited budget.

With your 01 Auto I believe you had the HY-35. Its about the smallest turbo they put on these trucks. Only the 01 and 02 auto's had them I believe.

Thats whay I had on mine with a j-hook on it till I got my Hybrid put in last weekend.

If your lookin for a good deal, Shop around for a used HX-35. Its a direct bolt up and will improve your air intake enough to run your comp box with injectors with no problems I think. Watch your pyro but it will still be better then the HY.

You could do a HX 40, I think you might have to change the down pipe with a 40 though, Im not sure about that. But your fuel mods would be enough to spool either HX 35 or 40 with a 12 or 14cm exhaust housing. IMO-In my opinion
HTH. - Hope this helps.

HX40 you will need a different down pipe. If I were you I would buy a used hy35 on ebay or get yours repaired. You won't find another turbo that will spool faster and for your mods it builds enough boost with a J-hook......unless that is a Smarty in your Sig, in that case it might be better to step up to an hx35 or hybrid.

Yea the hx35 for sure. True nothing will spool like the HY35 but the HX with a 12cm housing wont be much slower. And it will for sure help with EGT now and future.

If your gonna spend a few hundred on an HY, might as well spend 100 more on a HX for the upgrade factor. IMO

Thanks for your input, I did get an hx-35 , but a foreign made one. It is now going out again.. I am thinking of going to the hx-40 even tho i would have to get a new down pipe. I am wondering now tho if there is something wrong with my mods.. my edge box is problematic and needs to be replaced.

I had to unplug it because it would either not turn on.. or not turn off... or turn on all the way.

So what's the deal with these eBay turbos? I typed in HX40, and they had a bunch of "brand new" turbos for like 300 bucks, there's no way these are for real, right?

Lisleche, Im happy with my silver line system. Most will do fine.

Nick.. DO NOT BUY ONE!!!
They are total junk. About a year ago when I was looking to upgrade from my stock turbo, I ordered one of those from ebay.
When It got here I noticed it didnt have 'HOLSET' anywhere on it. I called em about it and they told me something like, Its a Borg Warner cast to Holset specifications. Totally bogus! I couldnt believe it.
I sent it back and it took 2 months and 20 phone calls to get my money back.

And Im not the only one this has happened too, Les's only lasted 6 months..
Industrial told me they get guys all the time that bought one and killed it and needed it rebuilt, but they cant cause is a Mut POS.
Shop around, get something with quality, and feel free to ask anyone on here what is thought about a certant brand. We're all here to help each other.
HTH Ian.

Ok.. have a rebuilt hx40 and down pipe.. looking at the original pipe and the original pipe is longer than the pipe recieved.. not the easy bolt on situation I was told when purchasing the down pipe. The pipe is 4" thorugh out and I am thinking I may have to get a transition pipe to hook up to the original pipe prior to the cat. any thoughts ?
