Anyone know what the stock spring rate is for the front coil springs? I've been in contact with CSS and wanted some input from anyone who has been running their springs. How do they ride, any sag, problems give the usual run down. thanks.

 

I think Cowhand (Conrad) would have this info, as he has some custom CSS springs on his riiiiiide.

 

There are several different OEM spring rates. If you can **** the tag numbers off the springs (it'll be like a 039, 046 or something like that) I can tell you what the OEM rate is.

How much additional ride height? What shock are you planning on running?

 

The tag says 039. I want to go with a leveling spring (2"). Not sure on the shock right now, but I'm leaning towards Bilsteins 5150's. I welcome any suggestions...

 

I had the 39/46 stack in from the factory. According to http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/springs.htm that puts my spring rate at 442#/in one one side, and a little more on the other (driver's side is stiffer to account for driver weight.)

 

Oh, and if you want a cheap lift, get the Chassis Cab springs. They're a little stiff, though

 

Thanks Justin, I guess I should mention the 039 is driver side and the passenger side is 038. What's the science behind spring rate vs spring height, ride quality. Anything I should be aware of?

 

Spring rate is the weight it takes to compress the spring 1 inch, i.e. 440# compresses 1 inch, 880# 2 inches, etc.

Two specs for spring height, free height and ride height (there's a third too, compressed height at coil bind). Free height is the length of the spring with no load, ride height is the length of the spring when the truck is sitting on it. For instance, a 440# spring with a sprung corner weight of 1900# will compress roughly 4.3" at ride height.

Compressed length is important because you don't want to hit coil bind before you hit the bump stops, you'll blow out the coil bucket.

As far as ride quality, look for a coil with thicker wire and closer coil spacing for better ride quality.

Search Justin's posts, he posted an excellent explanation a while back....I don't have time right now to get into the detail I usually would (at work).
