starwheel

Where is this star wheel and how do you adjust? How does this operate in conjunction with that fuel plate under the AFC which stands for what? Hows that for a question? Bek

Star wheel is under the round plug on top of your Inj pump. You simply get a small screw driver and turn it however I cant recall which way for more fuel. This loosens the spring preload causing more fueling at low boost. Do a search and you`ll find plenty.

See previous answer.
Turning the wheel so that it moves towards the radiator will dump more fuel under no/low boost situations.

The star wheel only controls the fuel quantity until the turbo can provide boost (Low RPM fuel control).
which stands for what? Hows that for a question?
Advanced Fuel Control? (I think).

I had a look at my starwheel the other day, and noticed it is about even with the front of the access hole. Is that where it usually is stock, or has the previous owner already turned it? Where are they normally stock or factory delivered position? I do seem to make a lot of black smoke at low throttle when leaving a stop ligt or when I step on it at say <1500 rpm..... I can get about 23 to25 pounds of boost, so think that's ok..........

You loosen the starwheel

for more fuel and more rapid boost and better low end, and u tighten it for just the opposite... Simple... yet fun!.... enjoy!

AFC= Air Fuel Control, to get more power take an allen head socket and remove the access plug, then give the starwheel about 10 clicks to get it where you want it, open it up all the way if you want. just make sure you have some gauges to monitor EGTS when you get on it. youll want to turn the wheel towards the passenger side for more fuel at less boost, the starwheel and corresponding spring are what control the movement of the fuel rack, which moves along the profile of the cam or fuel plate underneath it. you can also slide the AFC housing forward for more power. have fun

AFC = Air Fuel Control. Turn starwheel towards engine to increase fuel available (mine is full forward), the access plug on the top of the AFC is 8mm hex and can be very tight! The same gorilla who installs filters at plant puts in the access plug! The wheels are adjusted at plant and can be in slightly different positions.

You can also move the AFC housing to get the same thing. The star wheel is for a finer adjustment. The main thing it's for is smoke control.

if i'm making smoke and have no pyro guage am i just asking to have a turbo burn up?
i know the guy before me said that he had the pump turned up. i don't knoe that he did anything to the star wheel or the AFC housing???
hmmm.... looks like i need a guage soon huh?
how would i know if i've done any damage to my turbo or not????
i don't mean to jack the thread.
one other point,..... i thought that i read two different adjustments for the star wheel. one said to turn it to the engine for more fuel and the others said toward the radiator or the front of the engine....

There is no adjustment toward the radiator. If the pump has not been put on the stand, the only way to "turn up" the pump is govenor springs and fuel plate. There are a few ther ways but we won't go there. Few do.

Black smoke does not equate to power. Now if you make good power you may have smoke , but smoke in itself is not power. I have the same turbe as you and at 325K miles it's still going with 306 HP. Get the gauge anyway.

If the turbo's working, it's OK.

Does anyone have a picture of exactly where the starwheel is, I went to look at mine but couldn't find it. Either I'm blind or I just dont know what I'm looking for.

On the VE pump, you have to remove the top of the AFC cover with the diaphram and pull the fuel pin to access the starwheel. It takes a couple more minutes to remove the air signal line from the manifold, the 4 screws and pulling the pin (NOTE POSITION!) and adjusting the wheel. The P pump has a handy-dandy plug so you don't have to do all that.

If you go to Dodgeram.org VE power page it has all the adjustments you need with some diagrams.

I did that tune up on my last Dodge, but from the way I read the other posts I assumed they were talking about the inline pumps, am I wrong?

Thanks alot, I just tried it, I'm not sure how much I moved it but the spring got loose so I figured that was enough, but I could feel a difference in the acceleration.
