Starter problems, Maybe?

Ok went out this morning to start big red and nothing, power everything but nothing, so hit the key a couple more times and bammm fires up... start it a couple more time today no problems, then all the sudden go to start and nothing, clicks but nothing, so i cycle the key a couple of times then it tries to turn over, like a 1/2 turn over then nothing, hit the key again and bamm fires up?? Is this a starter problem, or a solenoid? or what? any one had this problem before.... come on throw me a bone or something to work with on this..thanks

Do a search on the starter contacts. You can get them from Foster Truck I think and change them cheeper than a new starter. Thats what I had to do to mine. They were worn pretty bad after 90000 miles.

it's the starter fix it either way (new starter or contacts) but fix it before it does to you what mine did. mine started out like yours then one day I started it and the starter stayed engaged couldn't shut it down put it it in 5th stalled it out put in clutch starts back up the only way to shut it down was unhook the both batterys

Starter

Had the same problem, got my kit from Napa, around $20 Canadian.. The kit contains 2 copper posts, new plunger, & a gasket for the solenoid. Dodge don't carry the parts, but wanted to sell me a new starter, around $500 installed .. I don't think so.. hardest part is getting the starter off & on.. putting the kit in 15 minutes. works as good as new, oh & to take my starter off I had to get torx wrenches.

So these contacts are in the starter? And i'm taking it, you can just buy a contact kit from a auto parts store? Thanks for all the info, guess that will be tomorrows project, now this truck does have 173k on it, and i did look at the starter last night, and it looks original, but you can never tell, called the local store 200.00 for starter and 190.00 core on it!!! they must want that one back!! So should i just go get another starter or change out these contacts?? thanks again..

These are better than what you will get at a local auto parts store.

Mine did that to me for about 2 months, it eventually got so bad it could take up to 15 minutes to get the dang thing to start. Like everyone said its the starter contacts, most kits are $20-$30 plus shipping and I got a brand new starter with a One (1) year warranty for $110 shipped. IMO if you have more than 100k miles I'd just get the new starter, I could tell a huge difference in actual starting power with a new one because the motor on the old one was getting worn. The starter I bought is very good quality also...

I second the Larry B's contacts. Huge difference between them and auto parts store stuff.
