South Bend Clutch - Which One??
South Bend Clutch - Which One??
Alright guys. i do believe that i have decided on a SBC DD clutch. so which one do i get?
SBC DD Street Comp 3600 lb. 12 CB
Ford or Dodge Lever type pressure plate with increased pedal effort @ 3600# plate load & 12 ceramic buttons per disc. Recommended for up to 650 hp. & heavy duty street, light sled pulling & off road use.
SBC DD Street Comp 3850 lb. 12 CB
Ford or Dodge Lever type pressure plate with heavy pedal effort @ 3850# plate load & 12 ceramic buttons per disc. Recommended for up to 750 hp. & heavy duty street, medium sled pulling & off road use.
SBC DD Street Comp 3850 lb. 12 FB
Ford or Dodge Lever type pressure plate with extreme pedal effort @ 3850# plate load & 12 feramic buttons per disc. Recommended for up to 750 hp. & heavy duty street, heavy sled pulling & off road use.
Whats the difference in feramic and ceramic buttons? i tow quite a bit and i might pull the sled once in a while.

The Feramic is probably a little grabbier and not as smooth. There's probably no need to step up to the Feramic in your usage.
The Feramic material is very easy on the flywheel. You should see the flywheels that come out of trucks running (and abusing) a Con FE (which is feramic), the flywheel looks almost brand new.
I consider Feramic to be the ideal clutch lining in every way EXCEPT smoothness, unfortunately.
Since you'll be towing, stick with the lighter DDs like Gunracer has. The ceramic is much smoother, from what I hear-- and still plenty strong.

If you're using it more for towing than sledpulling, then I'd stick with the ceramic buttons. For the amount of power you've got, the 3600 should be fine. That being said, the ferramic tows just fine, too - just a little grabbier. And it's better to have too much clutch than too little
. Backing the trailer with the ferramic is a little tougher than it would be with a lighter clutch, so that might be a concern if you tow a lot...
Hope that helps.

so the 3600 or the 3850 w/ceramic buttons? ill be upgrading my turbo because when i tow my egts are out of this world. maybe upgrade the comp to drag. can they do that with the one ive got? man, wish i would have went with the stage 5 nozzles instead of the 4s.

BD I just sent you a PM from a message you sent me a while back. I have the 3600 and if I were to do it a gain I would go with the 3850. The pedal effort on the 3600 feels like a stock clutch to me. Backing a trailer is no harder than a stock clutch, that is once it's broke in. I'm actually going to be taking mine out this winter and upgrading to the 3850.
Don't let pedal effort dictate which one you get either - mine felt really stiff the first time I drove it, but I really don't notice it anymore.
I'd be careful adding more fuel if you're still planning on just going with a Dodgezilla turbo. If you tow a lot, that's not much air for Stage 5 injectors and a drag box.
Oh, and there's a Dodgezilla on the TDR classifieds for $500, if you're interested...

I have had the 3850 DD for two years now and I tow every day. I also drive my trucck every day. After a few hooks to a sled Mine back just like my old single disc does. It takes a little getting use to at first but Its always nice to have a clutch thats built for more than what your are useing it for. you will have plenty of room to play with.

My response is the same as Aaron's. I have the 3850 with the 12 Ceramic Buttons and its awsome. You really don't notice the extra pedal effort unless like me you go from driving your truck to say my fiance's '02 Bettle.
I've only got 2 hooks on mine so far, but I've been driving on it since last November. Its truely an awsome clutch, very streetable, towable, and once you let out on that pedal all the way it LOCKS and down the track you go with the sled no worries....except for bouce.
Is this correct in that South Bend is using cerrametallic material in some of their clutches? Or is this an error on this post? Less than a year ago, I was lambasted on here by Peter from South Bend clutch for suggesting that cerrametallic linings have merit in some applications.....
