I just got my SMR shift kit from the UPS guy and read the instructions.

I called Pat back about step #3, (Modifying the throttle valve to delay upshifts for higher rpm shifts) . I asked him do I realy want that for a diesel? He said omit that step if I like my shift points. I didnt think I wanted higher rpm shift points with My cummins motor.

Anyone else skip step 3 ?

Im going to read the instructions over several times to realy understand all the functions of the vale body systems and what each does.

Is anyone else a expert on these 47re valve bodys and have any tips or advice?

Im also going to go talk to my trans guy who just bought a new chevy diesel dually truck. He is stoked on diesels now and says he will never own another gas truck. What a crack up ... He understands now finally!!!

 

Contact McMopar he can tell you everything you need to know. If I remember right, I went with the .310 measurement.

 

MikeD, Yea .310 is the heavyduty setting. Does your truck shift at a higher rpm now? Why would you want that with the cummins motor?

 

Not really, seems to shift about the same. Maybe just a tad slower to shift with light pedal driving.

No ill effect to performance. Helps to increase pressure before the shift happens..

 

That sounds good... Maybe install the new spring without grinding the valve???

It really doesn't matter, you can adjust your shift points later. But, I would NOT go with the .310 setting-I have found that it "might" bump you into the governor.

 

Mcmopar, Can you go into more detail on the throttle valve function,grinding /bump into govener? And adjusting shift points later??

Im still waiting for my trans temp port line to arrive so im still studying this kit before I pull my VB .

Grinding the end of the valve more and more increases the RPM point at which the tranny wants to shift, I have found that the .310 "CAN" bump you into the rev limiter/governor. You can adjust the tranny two ways-the easiest is the TV adjustment up by the TPS-but it is very course. The second is to drop the pan (my favorite ) and adjust the 3/16 allen bolt-the one poking through the steel bracket. You can adjust the "part-throttle" shift points by using the 3/16 allen bolt with the "LARGE" head. To increase pressure and shift points with the bolt in the steel bracket counter clockwise will "increase" the points, these are the full throttle points. The other bolt increases the part throttle shifts by turning it in a clockwise rotation.
