Smarty vs. Edge, Quadzilla, Hyper-tech

Been looking at different box's and I cant make up my mind. Smarty seems to have a cult like following around here, while edge and the like are better known. I like the idea of the small company with great customer service, but is it comparable to the edge with attitude or quadzilla? I know it doesnt have all the fancy gauges, but with the 2-300 difference in price, I can buy dedicated gauges for Feul pressure and EGT's, maybe even boost. Does it read/clear codes? What is the real HP gain? Thanks in advance!

If you're looking for hp, go for a wire tapping box. The tuners can only get so much out of the VP, which is around 65 hp. Anything above that, you'll need a box that taps the wire. The Edge EZ, Smarty, Hypertech, Superchips, etc. are all about the same peak hp gain. The EZ is cheap, but you can't check codes with it, change tire sizes, and so on. The tuners you can, and the Smarty has 10 different programs, as well as being updateable. Its worth the money, IMO.

If you're looking for bigger horsepower numbers, go with something like the Comp or Juice, or TST. The first two are timing boxes as well, so you really shouldn't stack them with the tuners, although the Smarty does have programs for this. TST, along with a few others, are fuel only boxes, and you can stack them with the tuners I mentioned in the first paragraph. The Smarty/TST stack is supposed to be something fierce, and I'm sure Blackdiesel will be here shortly to support that.

do you think the smarty with its 10 tunes is capable of doing damage to a stock truck with stock tranny and only an s&b cold air system and 4" turbo-back exhaust? i'm basically into this to haul a 3,000 pound trailer with an 8' by 8' front wall to pull through the wind. plus i used to road-race motorcycles, which is what put me into a wheelchair. i do enjoy horsepower, but at 61 yrs old am trying to make it to 100.

If you want simple and adjustable, stick with the edge EZ. It will add nearly the same peak power for towing, it will smoke less and it will be just enough to pull that trailer as if you had no trailer at all. If you a worried about hurting your stock truck, do not get a wire tapping edge comp, Qzilla zillerader, or a TST.

That said, the new quadzilla XZT+ is supposed to be an awesome box, good for 70 HP and has a timing only feature for added fuel economy when you don't need a ton of extra power. If I were to try a new box, I would try a Quadzilla product myself.

Smarty is out dated, overpriced, and will never get new updates. It does not have a strong enough market to support more R&D into newer tunes for download. They make so much more pushing their products on the new trucks that us 2nd gen guys have been forgotten.

The Smarty is overpriced. You can get a Diablosport power puck for about $200 and have the same power gain as the Smarty. Also for all out power, the Smarty is a poor choice - for some reason, it falls short when going for all out power. The plug in timing boxes offer more performance VS a Smarty.

Seems like most Smarty owners are tired of waiting for something new, maybe that's a hint??? Looks like the Quadzilla race box will be the new top dog. Too bad for Smarty but I still enjoy mine...
