Smarty VS Edge Comp.
Smarty VS Edge Comp.
I have the Edge Comp in the garage, waiting to be installed but a buddy wants to buy it off of me and put it in his 2001.. If I sell it to him and get a smarty will I be missing out on a lot or does the smarty have the same power gains??? Im not looking for all out power, yet. should I make the deal or stay with the edge comp??? Whats your opinion???

You will eventually want a non timing box, like the TST, stacked with the Smarty.... after you upgrade your clutch!
The Smarty (even setting for no timing) stacked on an Edge box is nice... but using the Smarty's timing (odd settings) on a 'fueling only' box is smoother and even better. So says Marco, developer of the Smarty, who tested both. I love my combo, and many that have tried Smarty both ways agree with Marco!
Staying with the Comp, and no Smarty, will be cheaper.... and not a bad way to go, depending on what HP level your headed for!
Your money.....your choice

I would sell the Comp and get the Smarty for now. Then when you are ready for more go with the Quad Xzillaraider, it's a very nice box and will give you all the power you need for alot less money than a comp, TST, or Blue Chip.
Keep the comp! When I bought my Smarty at IRP, we loaded it on a friends dually w/ 5-speed, comp box with wire tapped, and 100 horsepower injectors....... it was WICKED!!!!!
We couldn't keep the rear end of the truck planted while making turns and givin her some throttle. He was so happy, then I reset his truck to stock, then he was sad. Anyway if the TST stack is better than the comp box, then I really need to ride in a truck with that combination. I've got the comp and smarty and can't wait for my warranty on my injection pump to expire, then it'll be time to tap the pump wire. Let the coal and tire smoke roll man!

For the six speed HO trucks, your not going to see the comp box 120rwhp power increase as the SO trucks do. I would run the smarty. Don't get me wrong. I've ran both and I still use only my comp box. The smarty does to many things that I just don't like. Throttle thing, just bugs me. It messes up my kick down on my tranny which would lead to you killing your tranny. The torque that smarty makes off the line is wild. I don't know if your going to make anymore power running a smarty over stock but the power comes on so much sooner than comp box does. The smarty truck seems to lay down at wot vs. the comp box truck. A drag box/smarty combo on a SO truck is a hot package, hard on trannies though. I also found that the smarty dumps more smoke than the comp box. The injection pump advance at idle is increased as the idle quality changes. This isn't an issue for you stick guys. Guys running low stall converter you will find that the truck will work your brakes more when waiting for a light change.

I actually still use level 5 a lot, most of the time I don't want the smoke and high end the Hot level provides. You can't have level 5 like that with the Drag Comp box.
I vote for the Smarty. I showed Mike Holmen my truck with and without the Smarty, and the difference is huge. The truck was a dog without it, wouldn't smoke, wouldn't make as much boost, nor as quick. It definitely makes driving much more fun, and the diagnostic stuff is handy for those of us who can't do the 3-key cycle for codes.
Tate, you talking about running no box, no smarty and my spool-up? My ecm was to blame. It spools ok, not as good as the smarty and comp box. The smarty wakes up my mid range pretty good, the power is there all the way from idle to 120mph. Before I had to get into 3rd to feel the pull-power. I've dynoed my truck with a comp box and drag box. The power was within 10rwhp. Yes the drag box wakes up the top end rpm's nicely but really how often you run 2800 rpm's? I get nervious bouncing down the hiway at 100mph in my 4x4.

Sell the Comp, get the Smarty and add some big injectors. Depending on your goal, this might be the best combo out there!
I have run with the Comp/Smarty and the TST/Smarty. The TST/Smarty is the best. I'd bet that the guys saying Comp/Smarty haven't been in or driven a truck with the TST/Smarty combo.
Currently, I'm very happy with the injector/Smarty combo. Lenny (DDP) drove it and it put a big smile on his face!
