Is the Smarty a good add on for those of us that
already have a timing box (Van Aaken V5 ) Since it
doesn't add fuel by tapping a pump wire . Would it
just overlap what my Van Aaken already does or
would it add more fuel.I already have good throttle
response but want more fueling. I can really get on
the throttle at low rpm's and only get a slight haze,
so I know I can use more fuel.

No, a timing only box would be just about the worst stack with the Smarty Software. Without having first hand experience with the Smarty, I would go so far as to say a timing only box would be just about redundant with the Smarty.

You could use a timing box with the smarty. Just probably not the VAN adkin box because you dont have to option to turn it off and on like a comp or tst. Correst me if i'm wrong. Thats why Marco has that software available for. I run a COMP with my CaTCHER with less timiing and it works great.

OK, but I don't understand how a timing only box like the VA or EZ would benefit the Smarty software if you are stuck running a conservative timing map on the Smarty just to accommodate a box that does not add anymore fueling.....where is the gain when you are disabling a very aggressive and dynamic timing map just to run a timing only box?

In addition to timing, the Comp has VERY aggressive additional fueling......this is where the power gain from the MAD ECM and the Comp stack comes from - not from the additional timing that the Comp adds.

Thats what I thought. I would definately get a Smarty if
I didn't have a timing box already. I think i'll go ahead with
my plans to get the Blue Chip APB box for fueling and when
my Van Aaken goes bad, replace it with the Smarty.

My CaTCHER has the less timing. Now from what Marco has told me is when the COMP is turned on the timing from the COMP is now working like it should along with the additional fueling. Hince the less timing. Now I have read that using a timing box with a regular CaTCHER will produce to much timing. Even with the less timing an EZ WILL work. I have used an EZ and Comp and they both did quite well. It is also my understanding that the EZ does not have as much timing advancement as the COMP. I'm no expert, this is just what I have experienced and know it will work. I would suggest emailing the tech support on the Smarty site and see what they have to say.

PS Bob can you clear this up for us?

The EZ is a fueling box also. This is from Edge:

The Power Edge EZ is a plug in module that maximizes engine efficiency by monitoring the RPM, timing, turbo boost pressure and fueling parameters to determine both fueling and timing enhancements for the Bosch fuel injection pump.

you are better off getting the timing from within the ecm vs. adding a timing type box.

Dyno results show great success with a catcher aka smarty stacked with a fuel only type box.

There are issues to deal with when you have a timing/fueling box

lots of reports lately of cold weather stumble with comp boxes

The EZ like most timing boxes just bring on max fueling
sooner. They can't add additional fuel above max from
factory setting with out tapping the pump wire.

Bob now that you mention the rough starting I have had that since it been cold. Does this even occur when the box if off. I will unplug it and see what it does. But far as power wise. When my comp is on it got LOTS of power. Engine still seems to run great though.

Bob made 400 HP ( uncorrected ) on a DynoJet with his Catcher and M4's only. No other boxes, etc.

He had a Dodgezilla HX35/40 hybrid turbo when he did this. HX40 compressor wheel and a HX35 turbine wheel.

Yes.....but a fueling only box will have the greatest power potential with the Smarty software according to the MAD website.

You betcha! Or any other popular solenoid control box like the TST.

The TST and Smarty will kick it pretty hard.

Something I hope that most guys are not forgetting about the modified ECM programs that I want to point out is reliability!!!! Compared to an add on box, you are much much less likely to have issues with your factory ECM VS an add on box. Lets face it, the factory ECM's rarely have any issues and/or failures. The Edge COMPS break like clockwork in comparison for many people. I have many customers that are on their 6th or 7th COMP box.

Don~
