Smarty and the 2002 CTD
Three of us were talking Smarty today and two of us have an 04.5 and an 05. But the third truck is an 02 with an NV5600. This truck has some some lift pump mods and guages that show 15-16psi fuel pressure most of the time and a low of 13psi when really hammering it uphill. The truck also has some neat filtration mods for fuel and engine oil and was, at one time, chipped with a "Blue" chip, whatever that is. (Previous owner).
The new owner says the truck has serious torque down low, but feels soft in the mid range (he said good from 1400-1600 nice...soft above 2000.)
We went to the Smarty site (MADS) but there was no detail on what to expect with a Smarty for this truck from the different levels of software.
Figured I'd drop in to the 2nd Gen world and see if I could get some answers.

Smarty is only going to help much onthe bottom end >2k rpm. It really seems to fall on its face from 2250-redline. If your want more fuel up top look into a box that "taps" the pump wire.

But this might be the difference between how the smarty reacts to manuals vs autos.
For a stock or "somewhat" stock 6speed, I think the smarty would be a good non wire tap choice.

Actually I think 65 hp is generous, it changes the fueling and timing, but shouldn't be looked at as a "hp increaser".
If only the "promised updates" had come through.....I'll probably own one again or borrow one though. Urban sprawl finally caught up to me and I have to have my emissions tested. The only way I passed was because of the Smarty.

Smarty is good seat of the pants power adder for an 02 6 speed... and here is what I always say... find someone local with one and give it a try, if he doesn't like it go back to stock and keep looking.

Find someone local... Not likely in this NW corner of the woods. Heck, we're at the end of the line. My business partner and I are likely to do Smarty JR, but that apparently leaves the other guy out. Too bad. Seems if it just downloads software, why not work on all trucks? Just download the proper files.
Thanks for the input. Sounds like it might be worth a try. When this runs it's course, I'll place the order for the two Smarty Jr.s and ask DTS for a loaner for the older truck. Bet they'll go for that.

I like mine but again I have a 5 spd. I think people with a man. Like them alot better because it smooths out the power band and makes it larger and alot more friendly for a daily driver.
