Exclamation 2002 CTD with NO start and lots of codes!

Ok, I have a friend that runs an auto repair shop and they don't do much diesel work. They had a customer recently bring in an 02 dodge cummins that was havin a hard time running and now it won't run. He called me up and said no one in his shop wants to work on the diesel and they neeed some advice on fixing it. After talking to him this truck might end up being a job for me to do since him and none of his mechanics want to work on it. Any ways the truck is throwing a couple codes. It has the VP44 death code p0216 and it also showing p0234,p1689, and p1698. Obviously it needs an injection pump and propbably a lift pump if its bad too.

But the thing I have a question about it the p0234,p1689, and p1698 codes. I see the p0234 is an over boost. Does this mean a bad waste gate or bad MAP sensor? I had a p0237 on my truck and a new MAP sensor fixed it. Would it be the same for a p0234? I see one of the other codes refers to CCD and the other is a VP44 to ECM no communication code. What is the CCD code? I haven't dealt with it before. I have NOT look at the truck yet, i do plan on looking at it soon to help my friend out and it'll give me some extra cash if i do this job for him.

Thanks!
matt

When my VP crapped the bed, I was on vacation out of state and had to take it to a Cummins dealer to get it fixed. I was showing the death code and the overboost code as well. When Cummins hooked up their diagnostic machine to it, they can not only read the codes, but could also see how many times the code was stored. I had only one instance of the overboost code and something like 57 instances of the death code. Cummins dismissed the overboost code as fluke somehow related to the VP failure.

I belive you have thw death code and the othesr will ensue so..it does not matter ? Replace the pump - verify the L.P. is working.

Thanks guy, I plan on going to look at this truck soon. I have a FP gauge I can hook up to it. It will crank but just not start, maybe I can bump the starter and get it to prime. If need be, I have a spare MAP I can install on the truck, since its the same year as mine, to see if it gets rid of the 0234 code. I figured the VP was toast once he said it showed the 0216 code.

That truck is currently not turned up, if the LP is bad should I replace it with a stock carter or try to get the owner to put a fass or airdog on it? I guess the owner does not plan on upgrading the truck, I think its used for plowing and as a work truck.

Mini14, i'm sure this guy won't want to spend the money. If it were me I would upgrade but I'll talk to him about it and maybe coax him in to a better pump of some kind.

My truck has the 231, and one of the 16xx codes (can't remember which, maybe both) last time I ran codes a ton of other ones popped up all fuel/air related. It probably has something to do with the I.P. related dead pedal to throw the others. I would start with the pump and go from there.

many shops sell IP and VP combo deals, and I know some venders will not sell a VP without selling a new LP.you should at least tell the guy he needs some way of monitoring his FP, a gauge or light, something or his hard earned cash might go straight in the toilet.
as for the codes. clear them get it running and see if they return.
also I believe there is a relay in the underhood fuse box that can cause a no start and trip one of the death codes
