Silencer Ring

Hey guys,I removed the Ring off the 01 and it sounds wicked, but I'm wondering if removing will hurt airflow? or anything else? I pull travel trailers all the time and don't wanna find out the hard way.
Anything you all have to say would be appriciated.

no it doesn't hurt air flow. it is just there to keep the turbo quit.

Nope your good man, it actually allows more air into the turbo ( not much but it does ) and also helps reduce that dang turbo bark from letting off the throttle to quick under boost.

With it in or out?

I was told years ago it was placed there by Cummins as requested by Dodge to quiet the turbo. It actually makes no difference in or out as far as performance goes. Like I said, I was told this by a Cummins mechanic right after I bought my truck in '99.

It smooths the air intake.. less resistance.

Imagine the purpose of velocity stacks on a big block.

Dang, I was gonna take mine out until I heard it reduces the turbo bark when you left off the juice quickly.

It's held in by a snap ring. A screwdriver and about 2 minutes should take care of it. Just pull the intake tube, and pop the snap ring out, it will just fall out with it.

I've heard that too, but I've also seen bigger turbos (HX50, HX55) on ebay with silencer rings. Holset calls it an inlet baffle.

IMO, it probably improves compressor efficiency slightly, but removing it should help reduce turbo bark by letting the MWE do it's job. Also, IMO the increase in whistle is worth the slight decrease in efficiency.

http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/turbo_faq.htm

About 1/4 down this page shows the silencer ring and how to remove it.

It took me a little while and some frustration to get mine out because the screwdriver kept slipping. I ended up using some heavy duty pick tools, (They're like thick dentists tools which I got at wal-mart). Then I could lift the ring, hook it and work my way around.

Ive had the quietest toolbox on the street since I put my silencer ring in it.
It takes a little time and pick tools do help.

Rich.

Pull them out....but for God's sake....and your trucks....don't do it like this.

I have never seen such ........ lack of touch! Use two small, flat screw drivers, it is VERY simple.
