Shifting with SB ConFE 13"?

I think this is probably normal but have any of you noticed a difference in smoothness of shifting after you went to the big clutch? I figure it is due to the extra weight of the clutch that it is more difficult to get into the next gear when under heavy acceleration. Any comments?

John

If it's a little grabby or shudders a little when you take off or shift you probably don't have enough HP for the clutch.
The FE takes alot of HP to keep from doing this.
The OFE may have been a better choice. But it can do the same if the HP isn't enough.

: Eddie : 8)

I expected it to be a bit grabby but it really is fine when pulling away from a stoplight, it just engages quickly, no problems there. I went with the FE because I still plan on doing injectors and a bigger turbo. It is just noticeably more difficult to shift, it seems the trans is a bit "notchy" now. It shifts OK but you have to pay more attention and be slower with the stick.

John

Mine will take the power and keep grinning. Problem is that I am having trouble getting it out of gear, or sometimes in gear.
There are about 5 people in our area having this problem. We are looking into the problem one step at a time. :'(

Might want to change the tranny fluid HG. Mine was kinda hard to get in 1st from a dead stop, I changed the trans fluid and the problem went away. 8)

DB

Its hard to believe that changing the fluid will help it shift better. But it does!! 8) Use Redline MTL. It helps a LOT.

J.R.

I have been planning on changing it to see if it helps the problem but then why, since the fluid wasn't changed when Autowurks did the clutch, would the thing shift fine when I dropped it of on Monday and be different on Thursday when I picked it up? I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea, I LOVE the clutch and the guys at Autowurks did a GREAT job for me but I just was wondering if this was normal.

John

Wish I had an answer but Tom at Black Mountain Diesel freeked when I told him I had 70k on the truck without ever changing the tranny fluid. :-[ I couldn't believe it either but it really did make a difference in the shifting of the tranny after I dropped in the new stuff.

I do know one thing the more power you throw at the FE the better it shifts, and I'm going to have to get J.R. to help me out with the more power thing soon.

DB

Oh, I am not surprised by that at all. I have seen first hand the HUGE difference some fresh/good quality manual trans oil can make.

John

I used the Mopar fluid in mine, didn't even think of the Redline MTL. :

The 5spd does require a different type of fluid than the 6spd though.

Sorry but I can't recall the amount of fluid, but could check if no one else knows.

DB
