s&b intake or a bhaf

right now i have a bhaf on my truck but its starting to get dirty i blew it out with compressed air many times and now it looks dirty after a cleaning, i am not liking the ideal of $55 every 6 months for a air filter. whats yall think about a oiled cotton gauze air filter thats reusable. will the s&b do its job to filter out the air going to my engine. i really like the napa part # 2790 but $55 for 6 months. i know if i buy a s&b all i will have to buy is a cleaning kit every now and then. so i am not sure if i wanna spend $55 for a filter or $231 for a intake.

I have the s & b and I love it, the idea of a reusable filter has always been a + on my list rather than having to replace it whenever it gets dirty, and especially around where I live since its always windy and dusty

IMHO intakes are not worth it unless your pushing close too 500 rwhp. Just take the boot out of your factory air box find a filter that is reusable drop in and be done with it. AEM makes a few reusable drop in filters and there a dry filter also no oily mess. You will be surprised too see if you get the S & B that it is exactly like your stock air box with the whole in the side they no longer have the boot going in too the fender and it has a fancy clear piece of plexi glass not worth the money unless you just have too see that filter.

I never had any problems with my BHAF. I change it about once or twice a year. Depends how much im on gravel roads or workin down in the gravel pits. My price on the filter (WIX) is less than 50.00USD so its not a big deal..

I'm running a S&B, really like it. I also have a outerwear over it to catch the really big stuff. That system works for me... plus I like the turbo whistle...

I bought an S&B and took the box and drilled abunch of holes in it like swiss cheese and also drilled my hood cowl to get more air flow and turbo noise, and I live on a bad gravel road and the inside of the filter is still very clean after 6-7 months, and she sounds sick with the turbo whine also. I REALLY LIKE MINE

That's not good news. It's almost time for me to replace my BHAF, and I'm going to be if it won't fit in the intake tube!

From what I have seen over the years, its not the actual filter element that is the problem in the stock air box, its the fact of trying to seal the entire box lip all the way around to keep the dirt out. K&N sells some cheap foam gasket and others just tell you to use some grease.. I too many times see those brick filters leaking in the corners and dirt getting into the engine. Mine did. I purposely got a stock filter and only greased the lid about 1/2" away from the gasket surface very thinly. The dirt jets that come in from the corners are absolutely scary.

Any cone type connection to the BHAF or any other filter system removes that area of leakage and even if it isn't noticeably better (don't know how a BHAF could be worse) you don't have that leakage point. That was long ago, but the BHAF is a marked improvement over the stocker just for the seal alone. The current system I have I wouldn't trade for anything.
