Runnin with a 12v Lift pump

I installed the cummins 12v Lift pump today. Removed my FASS and all the wiring. Install was pretty easy but I got a good diesel bath before I was done. It now idles at 30 psi, no hard starts, cranks on the first revolution as always. Dont know how high it goes at full fuel because my gauge only goes to 34 psi. Anyone know of a 0-60 electric full press gauge? Thanks Tim

Did you have problems with the fass, or just didn't like it?

No problems just $600 and it was another electric fuel pump. Once you have a cam with the fuel pump lobe on it the fuel pump from cummins is only $150. Plus I like the idea of the mech. pump over electric. I bought a Fass because 2 years ago there were no other options for us. 12v engines go forever without problems with their lift pumps, sure wonder why cummins choose to go with the problematic electric ones in 98. All 98.5 to 02s have the fuel pump boss to mount the pump just no lobe on the cam. Tim

Thumbs up

good deal tim, it seems to be the wave of the future, besides the other benefits of the cam.

Where you get your cam and what it cost,if you dont mind telling us,looks like this is the way to go regardless of the price.

Where?

I read something on another site, I think Piers is the place and the cost is
"around" a grand for the cam and kit. Don't know if includes the pump or not.

Anyone else weigh in?

Nothing like knowing the only reason you have a fuel pressure gage is just for novelty.

The mech pump will outlast the truck in nearly all cases. 350,000 miles or more. I have disassembled plenty of mech pumps with over 200,000 and seen basically zero wear!

Electrics are spendy and not the most reliable thing you can get. Mechs run forever.

IF you feel somewhat handy with a wrench and dont think a camshaft will be too much for you..... The mech conversion is a must. Spend a single day turning wrenches and never have a pressure related fuel problem again!

Now to add the baddest hot rod VP ever built to Tims truck and see what happens.

Well I installed a 0-100 Press Gauge today and the truck idles at 30 psi and has close to 50 at 2k rpm. Does not seem to go higher above 2k though. I will try it with the Redline box at 100 percent to see if I get any press drop soon. Been raining for the last 24hrs here so I have not been able to do any real testing. Overall I am very happy with the cam and mech fuel pump mod. I need to go install my new Fluidamper now, and then get on the dyno. Tim

50? Oh yeah , I forgot your cam did not get the smaller lobe to control the pressure. LOL

Its ok, it wont hurt anything anyway.

Hey DonM(or anyone). What symptoms would a 12 valve have if the lift pump goes bad? Mine stutter's/pops above 3200rpm's(white/blue smoke like its running out of fuel). The timing is at 16 degrees. Havent done the valves yet, but cant see that causing the problem. Is the pump getting a little wore with only 187k, or what? Thanks for any help, and sorry for hijacking

Eric

Sounds like you are running out of fuel. This will sound stupid but is your fuel filter clean??

I think you little pump may need more timing.

I was also thinking a lack of fuel somehow. Filter was replaced not to long ago, and even right after i replaced it, it still did it(timing wasnt bumped then though). Im thinking weak lift pump?? I dont really think its timing. 16 degrees should be plenty, and the timing pop/miss is different from the pop/miss i have. The timing one doesent really smoke any; it just kind of pops. Mine starts white smoking around 3100, and kinda starts turning whitish/blue and popping at around 3300rpm's. I have already replaced the overflow valve too. Thanks

Someone correct me if I am wrong (Don M) but don't the little pumps like more timing than 16 degrees I always thought they preferred 18-19 degrees.
