The Results are in (Module and MPG)

I recently did some posting on this forum regarding how to optimize my fuel economy on my 99 Dodge Cummins. I listened alot to posters and talked to some of the manufactures of aftermarket products. I purchased my vehicle for higher fuel economy than a gas rig. One fellow responded to my post that he felt that the most bang for the buck was to purchase the True Torque Power Module From Diesel Dynamics and use the timing only setting. The module approach seemed to me, based on my analysis of all discusions, to be the best way to go. So, I purchased the Module from Diesel Dynamics and made three fuel economy runs. (Keith from Diesel Dynamics felt that with the module set for most agressive performance I would get the best economy so I did a run with timing only and a run with module set for most agressive performance and a run without the module) The runs consisted of freeway driving on flat road for 89 miles, no A/C on, lite wind, dirving most of the way at 70 MPH and 10 miles at 60 MPH. My pop top cabover camper (2000#) was installed. The air temp was 60 - 65 degrees. The runs were all round trip and I filled up at the same station with vehicle sitting at same spot at each fillup. I think I was able to fill to the same full point every time and was very careful about that. I wanted to do a longer run with alot more distance but when I called Diesel Dynamics to see if I could get a 10 day extension on my 30 return (If the unit failed to get the advertised MPG increase I wanted to return it) I was told No. (I am taking a long trip the first of May and would have been able to test the unit better over longer runs) The Results: With Module Set for timing only: 17.82mpg, With module set at most agressive setting: 17.00, With Module not installed: 17.82. I am returning the unit.

Good reading- It seems that you have tried to sort out any other influence. How did you like the power increase at the most aggressive setting? (Actually that's what I bought my Edge Pulse for and I'm enjoying the fact that my mileage didn't decrease, rather increase a wee little bit 3-5%, but there were other mods too so I don't know where to attribute the increase)
Maybe you should try to do the same kind of test with an Edge EZ. Hopefully one of hte vendors on this site will jump forward and offer a module for independant testing.
I think that you should also keep in mind that different trucks do have different yields from the same mod. I do also think that you can be quite content with the mileage.

AlpineRam: I really didn' t like the increase in power as I had concerns over my poor transmission (not that it's giving me problems but I hear stories that the Automatic isn't the strongest trans in the world) Stock, I am amazed at how much power the truck has so don't really want any more.

I didn't do a controlled test like John, but I've tracked mileage since new - 2 years ago. After installing the TTPM, I noticed no difference in mileage (on setting 3). However, I do like the added power for towing. The fact is, if you use that power, your gonna hurt the mileage.

18mpg with a 2000# camper running 70mph. Sounds like pretty good economy to me.

Power=fuel. The more of one you use, the more of the other you use.

If you want maximum efficiency at a given power level, that's another thing altogether.

For a great towing rig with great economy, I would go with EDM1.5s, an EZ or TTPM, a 16cm turbine housing, a 4" exhaust and an free-flowing intake.

That should but you around 320hp of usable, safe, towable EGT power and maximum efficiency for minimum $$$.

I agree with the benifit of an ez and 4 in exhaust. I've seen better fuel milage since installing both and the extra power is nice to play with once in a while.
