rebuild kits
anyone point me in the right direction for a complete rebuild kit for a 5.9 i have in the shop. i was thinking about checlking the cummins house for a 370 kit with pistons. this is for a 96 215 motor.
this is a motor i had in a a wrecked truck out back of my buddies shop. it flooded bad this spring, and water got in 2 cylinders. so i am figuring a .20 overbore on the pistons and std on the mains and rods. the bad thing is the motor only had 110k on it. but this one will be a full boogie set up, twins, lots of fuel and i am going to shove it in a 59 chevy 2wd short bed. shooting for 700 plus hp and 30mpgs. i am a optimist.
yep, i got the same prob. only my motor was worn smooth out, then it got rained in. i need a sleeve on #6,bored out .020, crank turned .010, valve job, gettin port and polished and the guy at the machine shop got me a rebuild kit for +/-700 with pistons and all, he said it was a federal moguil rebuild kit. did you know those motors only have 1 cam bearing??!!? i thought that was insane. when i get more money, i might buy the 370 pistons and cam, but it will run for right now. i spent 2500 on gettin the motor rebuilt with a kit, but it will be like new when i get done with it. my rockers, pushrods, oil pump, water pump, oil pickup tube, everything was junk. theres a guy with the name smokinfive9 that has the 370 pistons, cam, and injectors. maybe he will pitch in some info for ya.
I got the pistons from Cummins, I'll try to find a receipt, but if my memory serves me, they were around 900 for the set. The cam was used, from a guy the worked at the dealer. I know that Enterprise Engine has all this available, as do any of the other vendors I'm sure. Rebuild kits, I found a gasket kit minus the oil pan and head gasket at Advance Auto Parts. It was actually a head gasket kit, hsu9332, $49.88. Came with all the gaskets from the head up, even the brass washers and the C-things ( I dunno what the name is really lol) for the injectors. Valve seals were all included. Went with the stock head gasket from Cummins. The oil pan gasket is available from AAP also, but it's seperate. Or at least when I bought this stuff it was. Of course no pistons were included. Nor were rings and bearings, those I got from Enterprise.
I just got an overhaul kit from Cummins for an 8.3L, they're very complete, but plan on spending some $$$ if the 5.9 kit is like the 8.3. IT was over 4k. the 5.9L doesn't have sleeves, of course so that may take care of some of the cost. Worth a shot. Keep me updated on what you come up with if you would, I have 2 more 5.9's to rebuild in the near future, always helpful to find more than one good source :-)

what are you rebuilding that 8.3 for??? and will it fit in a dodge?? i was really wondering about that but never really had the time to look at a 8.3 good or to ask if one will fit...?? i like those sleeves, too bad the little 5.9's don't have any, i'd have my motor running by now if it did.
well i found a place out of oregon that will sell me a rebuild kit for a 370 marine motor for less than 600 bucks, almost sounds to good to be true. i bet the pistons are not coated.

here is the link, talk to randy. they look like the right shape to be the marine pisons, as in the pointed cone in the piston.
