Quiet stacks anyone?

Im thinking about adding stacks.. partly to free up some space under the bed for some other gizmos I want to install.
Heard the noise can be bad since the stacks are right there behind you in a std cab. Anyone had luck with adding a good muffler ahead of the stacks (is there even room for that?) or am I just crazy thinking stacks can be made quiet?
Most of the noise is just the engine on the 2nd gen, its hard to think exhaust could be worse.

I added a muffler to, before my stacks and there is room underneath...You would not believe the difference....Not loud at all and no highway drone...Can't even tell the stacks are there....And my truck is a regular cab also...

When towing, I add a muffler. It's a Donaldson 'stack' muffler---the one you see on rigs pointed up with the stack topper. It's a 4'' straight through design and does indeed make my truck sound like a muffled big rig--pretty neat, I think. I've got a 4'' piece of straight pipe that I clamp in its place when not towing. It's about a 5 minute swap.

A second turbo does wonders for killing the drone. I couldn't drive my dually long distances on a single turbo. With twins, it was livable.

take a look at a resonator. i have a straight pipe now(punched cat no muffler and 5"dual stacks) it is very loud. ive been told a 30" resonator will deaden the sound alot. thats what im looking at now.

You know what else would really be useful, is some method to switch the exhaust between stacks and a conventional tailpipe.
I haul motorcycles a lot in the summer I dont want them turning black on the way to where Im going.

go old school like the hotroders use to. a "Y" pipe with either elec. or manual switch to cause flow to go out tail or up stacks

Stack height is another key to noise in the cab, mine is above the cab a couple inches above the cab and its not to bad at all, only gets loud when all the windows are open. But then again, people's perception of loud are different, lol. I don't have a stack on my truck for it to be quiet lol.

I wouldn't call your truck quiet inside, Greg. Especially when your back window starts vibrating from the resonance. And that was only a 5 minute drive.

Should hear it with the back slider open then tate, good times haha. I usually always have my music at an adequate level so stack noise doesn't bother me, becomes your friend on long drives 10-12 hours haha.
