pto pump

I am wanting to put a pto pump on my 01 Dodge with an automatic transmission. Can this be done? I have not looked under the truck to see if there is a plate or not. This would be used to run a hydraulic winch on a trailer. Does anyone know if this would be possible?

as far as i know no it cant be done. i would get a 12 volt electric over hydraulic pump set up. i have seen them go for less than 200 bucks on e-bay. that would be an easier and way cheaper route to go.

The automatics have no provision for a PTO.

Some of the HD transfer cases have a PTO adapter plate.

Yes It can be done as I have seen this. If you dont have a place for a pto you can change the transfercase to one that has a pto cover plate. I think that the HD241 is one that has a cover plate My father installed a pto on his first generation truck. He had a pto wench on a automatic truck that was 4x4 . The only one I have seen. Jim

If you have the 241HD t-case, there is a pto provision.

There is a pto drive on the transfer case but you can get in trouble using it.
On a manual the pto is driven at fly wheel speed, clutch disconnects it and engine rpm determines pto rpm. Tranny gear or neutral makes no difference in speed.

On a transfer case pto you have to put the tranny in gear with the transfer case in N, tranny gear will determine rpm along with engine rpm. Big problem is that the pto will turn backwards in reverse which can spell disaster for some pto driven components especially a hydraulic pump.

With an auto you're better off with a 12 volt hydraulic pump.

Years ago we had an IH Scout with a Ramsey PTO gear winch. That thing was the greastes winch ever. 3 forward speeds (trans) and 1 reverse. Ultimate control and phenomonel power. Amzing what 87 h.p. can do geared down. I think the drum was rated for 80K. Would love to have one again, but I don't even see them available.

Nah, anything can have a PTO. You just take belt and tension it around the driveshaft, carry a jack in the back to prop up the rear wheels, and your set. Just like in Mexico.

This is all you need. mount it in the trailer with a battery and use your truck to keep it charged as you pull it.

It is possible to run remotes off your power steering pump with a control valve. I have done it on my Jeep but even a Hydro boost pump only puts out a about 4 gpm @ 1500psi so anything it powers will not be very quick. The winch I use is extremely strong running off the power steering pump and performs very well - as long as you are not in a hurry.

That is true. We use to place the transfercase in Nertral and the auto in Neutral at start. 3 forward and 1 reverse speed in the tulsa wench. Dad used the truck that way for years. Sometimes you had to kill the truck to keep from clashing the gears in the pto. A toque convertor driven wench is different for sure . Jim

You can by a hyd pump kit that drives of the crank with a belt. The pump has a clutch like a A/C compressor. They work great, there used on two trucks then you don't have to mess around with a pto. I have installed them on a Ford 7.3 and A 5.7 Chev. They come as a kit made by Muncie.
