I have a 98 cummins (24 valve version). I currently have a 4" straight pipe from the turbo dump and am thinking about adding some more goodies. I want to add a cool air intake system. Looked into the K&N stage 2 kit. Also, would like to possibly get a programmer. The questions I have are as follow: What cool air intake and programmer do you guys recommend. Also, this truck has 110000 miles on it without anything done (or problems) with the tranny. Would screwing around with a programmer cause significant harm to the tranny. What would be recommended for the tranny if this is going to be a problem. I just want a little more juice, nothing to extreme (to distrupt the reliability). Finally, would adding these parts help with gas mileage. I have been getting pretty bad mileage (around 12-14 miles depending on driving). Any help with the gas condition would be much appreciated also. I live in California and the prices are getting out of control {Just saw 2.69 a gallon!}. Thanks a bunch.
First ,you need to fill out your sig on the bottom of your posts. Second ,welcome to the site. It is very helpfull and just good all around. Third , it always starts out as just a little more power but it truely is the snow ball affect when you realize the massive potential of these iron works of art.
Welcome to DTR!
Your truck is considered to be a 98.5 model as it has the 24 valve engine. In my opinion nothing beats the Scotty II for CoOooOoOool air. If you do not want to do any damage to the tranny, you will need to stick with a small box like the Edge EZ or the Quadzilla 65 HP.
These boxes are not guaranteed to be safe for your transmission, but if you drive easy you should be OK. Remember that the most damage to the transmission will occur when pouring on the power from a stop, no jack rabbit starts and the tranny will live longer.
These boxes can help improve your mileage a bit, but only if you don't change your driving habits
I would not add ANY fuel enhancing device like the ones I mentioned, without putting in an EGT gauge first.
People will tell you that it is safe to do so, but I think the cost of the gauge is cheap insurance to keep from burning up a piston.
If you have any questions toss them out here, lot's of guys here who have already done the same thing to their 98.5 trucks

One other small piece of advice, stay away from the $2.69 gas. These here trucks use diesel fuel.
