First off you guys are evil, and so is the internet for making you all available to me at the touch of a keyboard. This performance/ upgrading stuff is catchy. I was a performance hound before, but it isn't as expensive with gassers.

So I did some towing this past weekend and would like to be able to pull the hills a little better. Keep in mind I work for the gov't and they don't pay me a fortune. My first thoughts are to collect my guages and pod. Then I am going to get a BHAF. From there what should I do. I was thinking 4" exhaust. I don't want to wake the whole house up whith the exhaust. The diesel clatter is already loud enough. From there I have no idea what mod to make. I've read alot on here about ECM stuff rather than boxes. Again, I'm not rich and I don't want a race truck. I want to maintain my fuel economy or improve it. The wife gave me the go ahead to do whatever I want as long as it doesn't hurt the rig. If the mods start breaking things she'll put me out with the dog.
I must have read 40 threads tonight after searching for "towing performance," and "need more towing power."

HELP!!
Steve

1ST!! Get gauges!!! EGT and fuel pressure are mandatory!
Add 4" exhaust,
then add shift kit or valve body,
then EZ or Comp! you don't need BHAF till you make a lot more power.
only $1000-$1500 total

If you're under a tight budget, just do a used EZ and guages. 4" Exhaust and BHAF don't give any performance increase.

For EGT control a hybrided HX35 turbo will give lower temps for the same money spent as a BHAF and 4" exhaust does, plus give additional power.

Can you explain to me how this works?
I am guessing from everything I have read the HX35 is a new turbo?

The wife called me asking what I wanted for 400 bucks. She wants a new ring. I got some credit now!!!! I should have my guages and pod in a week or two.

Keep in mind that the trade off for the lower EGT's on a bigger turbo is longer spool up times. If you use it in conjuction with other mods they compensate some for that but on an otherwise stock truck, "to me" the longer spool time would make it to much of a dog in the lowend.

If your on a tight budget I would do the VA V5 and save $100 over the EZ and get just as good of product.

I suggest a used EZ, which are avialable everywhere for under $300. But if he can find a used VA, go for it.

Okay. First of all, you dont need injectors, box, Mad ecm, built tranny, and turbo to help out towing. What i would reccomend is to get fuel pressure, boost, egt, and tranny temp gauges, and then do a bhaf, and a van aaken(or EZ) box. This well help you out enough towing that you shouldnt drop any speed on the hills, and as long as you dont abuse it, it shouldnt hurt your tranny. The Van aaken, and EZ are both good boxes, but seems the van aaken is a little better for low end power, and cost a little less. None of this will hurt the life of your injection pump either, as they do not tap the pump wire.

I have to agree with 635, I'd get a Va or Ez and guages for now. It will help with your towing. Once you start bombing it can get into your blood and all reasoning power is lost! I tow and you can see the mods I have. So far I'm very happy the results. My friend had an Ez and now tows with a Va smart box and he is very happy with the results.

Good luck

Gary

I would put a upgrade shift kit in the trans for towing , at least.

I installed a SMR shift kit .Good kit! It will make your stock trans live longer, upgrades overdrive and lockup problems that accure with stock trans while towing. I just went on a 3000 mile trip with my new SMR VB kit pulling a 8000 lb 5th wheel up and down the sierra nevada, Willamette and Owyhee mountains. My trans shifted way better, firm, crisp, without hesitation. trans temps stayed at 140 degrees except pulling steep grades out of lock up.

Putting a shift kit in a transmission with higher mileage, or weak to begin with will just create blown seals, and other internal problems, but will help immensely in a reasonably good tranny. Just be aware that even a towing box(VanAaken or E-Z) may cause trans to be slipping in a short time, especially if trans is already weak. I towed with VanAaken box, and shift kit in tranny, and it held fine UNTIL I installed just the MAD ECM by itself.

What is concidered high mileage on the 99 auto trannies? Mine (that I know of) has 116,600k. There aren't any leaks anywhere so it looks like the tranny may have been replaced, or just that nothing leaks so everything is clean. The dealer I bought it from didn't clean it or anything. In fact I had to threaten not to buy the extended warrantee unless they filled the tank. The fuel light came on while I was test driving it. That sales lady was POed. I don't think they made a thing off of this one. Then I got a call the other day from the dealership asking about their service. I told them it stuck and they gave me a free oil change. I'll take advantage of that freebie.

Also, when I turn the O/D off while driving the RPM's go up pretty good. The weird thing to me is when you put it back on with the RPM's about 2K it seems to shift down to second(2500 rpms) then up to third and then O/D. Is that normal?

"Normal"

Yeah, it's normal. To keep from shelling the drivetrain. The tc will unlock when
you push that button, so the rpms go up, then it locks back up and the rpms
go down. Feels like another gear, but it ain't.
