Performance Question?

I know this has probably been asked before but here I go. I am looking at buying 98 to 2002 24valve dodge 4x4 cummins with a standard and was wondering what would be involved to get one of these into the 12's in the quarter and how reliable it would be on the street? This truck would be my daily driver and the heaviest thing it would ever haul would be my Big block turbo dakota I am building. Also what kind of mileage could I still get with the power turned down ?

Thanks

It will take TONS of power to get a manual in to the 12's. I'd shoot for the 14's. You will likely have problems with such an aggressive truck if it actually ran 12's.

How big of difference does an auto make?? Also how do you keep the auto alive?
Also would a 12valve be a better base for something like this?? Can the power levels be turned up and down as easy on the 12valve motors if not how much more involved is it?

Thanks

An auto would be a good bit faster, and just as reliable, there are several companies out there that can build an auto to hold that kind of power.

A 12v is my personal preferance, but they are all mechanical, not as easy to turn the power down, you can install a valet switch that will keep a 12v from injecting as much fuel as in full fuel mode, but not nearly as variable as an electronic box.

Talking

autos cost huge bucks to take the kind of power to get you into the 12s,why not stick a 12 valve into your dakota with an auto some dvs and a set of twins and some injetors and pump work and you may see the 12s your looking for

A stick in a 2nd gen truck is gonna be hard to get into the 12's...would have to be regular cab, with a DD clutch, and about 650+hp! Probably gonna take some spray, too!

I'm shooting for low 12's in my 98...but who knows. 13's will be easy, 12's are another story!

Memebr Joefarmer had a 648hp 99 5 speed that ran a 14.001 in the 1/4...it's just hard to shift them that fast!

I've heard it said the auto is worth a hundred hp over the stick on the drag strip, and I believe it. Diesel Dynamics was solidly in the 12s with their shop garbage truck 4 years ago. They used "spray" to get it there.
