performance head????

I was thinking about getting a performance head and cam for my truck. I have a boost leak and am having a little issue with my egts while towing. I will get this issue fixed, but I still think I may like to upgrade the head to help with quicker boosts and egt. What do you guys recommend and how much out of pocket would I be. How much in upgrades should I do.

thanks

A new Cummins head, call Mumua Diesel- Jeff has the best prices. Then send it off to get ported, intake milled off, tap head, install new billet manifold.

I just picked a head up from the machine shop. The owner told me that the reman. 24v heads will be available end of this month. He said prices looked reasonable, but thats as far as we got.

Tough to cam a head, considering the cam goes in the block.

Most big name diesel shops have port/polish heads, and take yours as a core. As long as its not cracked, you're good. Hamilton will be coming out with aftermarket heads in the near future, sounds like there is real good progress on the 12v heads, 24v and CR heads to follow.

i meant a cam that is goes with the head work. Don't they have to cut a cam to work with everything done to the truck.

I don't know very much, but I honestly haven't heard anyone talk about performance cams unless they are making over 1000hp.... Not many people even talking about performance heads for that matter. Just head studs and o-rings with a marine gasket. Am I missing something here?????

A new Cummins loaded head runs about $2500, and remans run $1500 loaded. I think turbos and injectors along with intakes and exhausts will control your egt....

Don't heads and cam help with spool and egts? I have a 24 ft car hauler and while hauling a vehicle I easily run 1200+ degrees. I usually back off when it gets there, but I was thinking about future upgrades to help out. Does anybody else with mach 6's have this problem or just me. I didn't think the injectors would be to much, but I might be wrong.

I am nowhere near 1k hp, and I've got a cam in my truck. Did a nice job of bringing in the turbo a bit faster. Not sure about the EGT's, I don't really pay attention to those anymore on my dually.

You can run an off the shelf cam with a ported head, you can run a custom cam with a stock head. Not sure how the specs will vary, but talk to a cam manufacturer and see what they say. Pretty sure Geoff at Colt Cams does customs ones, as well as Bill Fletcher. I'm running a Hamilton Big Stick (that Geoff at Colt made), I'm happy with it. I was gonna get an H2 from F1, but they don't reccomend the reg cam for p-pumps, and the Spartan billets are around $1200 last time I checked.

No guru here, but you don't list any mods but Mach 6's. For anyone to provide much advice, they'd need to no what else has been done. Generally turbos are your friend at reducing EGT's. You can push a lot of fuel with 6's. With an otherwise stock engine and a big load, egt's will soar.

Get a bigger primary charger. Towing twins have what, a 66 on bottom? Get a 475 or 3b, they tow great and alot less money than a done up head and cam. jmho.

BD Twins aren't enough to cool Mach 6's... I used to run BD Twins with Mach 5's and it still got toasty...

You don't need a specific cam grind for any head port/polish work... where you start getting into needing extras is if you get a really aggressive cam profile where you have to flycut your pistons for valve clearance... you're a long way from being in this realm... even just a street cam is a ton of work for any realized gains... you have to tear your truck down just to access the front of the engine... I speak from experience. When we Ppumped my truck we tossed in a cam since the truck was coming apart already... perfect time to do it.

I've run mach 6'rs twins, ported head, cammed. Yes it makes a difference. Colt stage 3 cam is a sweet deal for the non fly cut piston CTD. You could run a CR head as they are abit cheaper, but you'll have to buy custom injector cross lines for a CR to VP. The problem with the 24V CTD head is that it cracks very easy under heat and valves get burnt up pretty easy. For a $3500 new ported head, I should have got more than 60k miles before it was junk.

Today I spray water/meth under load or towing. It works pretty good at saving broken parts.
