PDR Twins back to single???
PDR Twins back to single???
Hey guys I might seem crazy with this idea but I'm thinking of taking my PDR HX 40-3B twins off and going back to a single! I love the 12 valve Cummins for it's simplicity and durability and although I have not had any problems with the twins it really cramps the engine compartment and makes changing the oil and other maintanence a real chore, not to mention all the extra boots and possible spots to have a leak. Also I REALLY miss the sound of a straight piped single turbo! The twins make the truck almost too quiet, I have a 5 inch straight pipe and while driving in the truck with the windows down you can't even hear the exhaust note! I want the sound back that I had with my HX 40 by itself.
I know the twins really cooled the EGT's compared to the single 40 but it didn't seem like a huge power increase, but I've had them for a couple of years and my memory is a little foggy
I'm thinking of trying the silver bullet 66, I'm just not sure if it's going to be a real laggy turbo and if my egt's will go way up on the top end. The 40-3B isn't the fastest spooling set up on the planet but if the SB66 is about the same I'd be happy. My truck is a 98 12 valve 5 speed, 4 inch lift, 35 inch tires and 3.54 geared. I'm running DDP stage 4 injectors, 0 plate, laser cut deliver valves, 4000 GSK, timing about 20 degrees, and I have a new ported and o-ringed head waiting to be installed. I don't beat the heck out of my truck, no sled pulling or drag racing, I do tow a trailer in the spring, summer and fall around 7000 or so pounds. How does a SB66 tow? Do you think I would regret switching from twins to a single?
Thanks!!!

If it were me and I already went through the build up to compound turbos, I wouldn't go back. You go to the single turbo and you will be one of the one-eyed drivers again as you have to have the Pyro mounted to your eyeglasses.
If you like lag, smoke and high EGT's then I guess the single is the way to go.. 12V's have enough breathing problems without going to a big single.
IMHO of course..

You won't like ANY 66mm charger with 35's and 3.54 gears...trust me
Unless you add a cam, and that head is VERY ported, I don't think you'd like the lag, and the way it runs everyday...especially towing anything more than a lawnmower trailer in the summer months.
If you want to get better, go with a S300/S400 twinset and be done...spool better than that HX40, and should cool just as good too

i have a decent amount of fuel and a cam, custom pistons, well a custom built motor and my egts get HOT very fast with my sps 66, matter of fact, as soon as i can finish the fabrication of my twins the 66 is coming off and going in the classifieds. but suit yourself, that is my .02
Thanks guys, you confirmed what I was thinking, I am crazy!
I've had the twins for a couple of years now and I guess I just don't remember what a single was like on the truck, mabey I'll get a remote mount oil filter and mount that in a better location to solve the whole changing oil mess. Thanks

How much time is being added for you?
IMHO
It doesn't seem to add more than about 10 minutes. If the filter pipe (to filter) sticks and is hard to remove, spray it with silicone lube. It's not under pressure, so don't worry about it coming off.
There are 3 clamps, two of which are a PITA. The cold pipe at the 3B is easiest with about 20" of extension (if the clamp is aimed up and the extension gets the ratchet above the fire wall) or a Gear Wrench (open all the way through so the stud protrudes through a short socket. The Filter pipe clamp is easiest with the Gear Wrench. Here's a link to the Gear Wrench so you can see one.... http://www.gearwrench.com/ratchet_an...chet/index.jsp

With my truck its about an extra 1/2hr to an oil change. I have to remove my battery and the cold air inlet to the 3B. It would be difficult go back to a truck that doesn't light up the way that your current 40/3B combo does.
Yeah, it's not that much harder to change the oil filter, about 10 minutes or so. Just kind of annoying. Today I checked to see where the 40/3b twins start to spool and the guage starts to move at about 1500 RPM and boost builds somewhat slow. I would guess a good size single might spool about the same but wouldn't keep the EGT's as cool on the top end. How does the 62 spool compared to your towing twins Forrest? I'm sure the towing set spools faster than my set up. Thanks guys.
I have thought about twins but it would be tough to give up this USB Bell turbo. I read about all the others and so far I have no problems with this turbo at all. Spool is great and takes care of egt's also. Why I don't know. I wish more of these were out there.I want Pius to set me up with twins. I would almost bet if he does you won't beat'em. Just my thoughts
