It will be interesting to see how this turns out! I've been thinking about doing this since I'm not pulling as much as I thought I would be.

well then only reason I didnt go with an auto in the first place
was cuz at the time of my conversion funds got tight
no after upgradeing the clutch already once and prob needing to again by springs (gotta luv mo power)

Now I got in the position where I can maybe do this
I wanna do it right on something that is virtually maintence free (except for service of course) for many miles

that and after driving the old mans '05 CTD
I love the just shift and go of an automatic

So now I need someone to educate me on the diff. of a RH and RE
my motor is a '95 if that makes any diff?
what electronics am I goin need then?

Thanks
Tanner

The 47RH would be the easiest to swap in, only 2 switches are needed to make one work. 1 switch for OD and the other for lockup, you could do it a little fancier, but 2 switches will get the job done. The hydraulic governer will take care of shifting gears 1 through 3.

The 47RE doesn't have the hydraulic governer and so there are electronic sensors and selinoids that need the computer to work properly. I've heard of stand alone units, but I don't know much about them.

Don't forget to get the wiring harnesses or plugs that go to the trans.

From: so ca,
re = electronic shift (computer) rh= hydraulic but the rh still uses electronics for the lock up converter which i think you can use a switch instead..

It's just 2 selinoids on the valve body, a switch will work just fine. Its what I use on mine, just don't forget to unlock the converter when you stop.

The RH is easy to convert, but you will have to use "pressure" switches or a toggle switch, or maybe a foot "dimmer" type setup.

I am a huge Dave Goerend fan, but in your case you can go to ATS, they have a complete RE setup with a custom valve body that has their own contol module that you can plug into a laptop and set all of the parameters you will need. The RE's are easier to find, they made them from 1996 to today. Although they did change from the 47RE to the 48RE. You might want to consider the 48 as it is a "beefier" unit. The RH trannies were a 2 year run, 94 and 95.

so an rh would have the od switch (in shifter for a ford-so that takes care of that)
then how does the lockup switch work? I like the dimmer switch idea
the only auto I have been around is the 48re in dads 05

or would a stand alone box and a re be better?

I am confused

The switches I'm talking about are good old fashioned toggle switches, the old head light high/low beam switch would work too. The in shifter switch on a ford won't work without some support electronics and if you get that involved you mine as well go RE with a control box.

From: so ca,
The switch would basically make the lock up, switch manually on and off

I did not mean to confuse, I just wanted you to know that the RE is now easy to retrofit with the ATS controller and VB. You can do the RH with toggle switches, somewhat basic and you will need to throw switches to unlock the converter before you stop so you don;t stall. If you use pressure switches they will let the TC unlock before you come to a stop. Pressure switches will also let the OD be automatic as opposed to you having to control EVERYTHING.
