Painting A Pillar Covers to Match My Truck

I'm looking to buy a set of A Pillar Covers with the tweeter spots (for the Infinity system) and put my own tweeters in there. I found a set of them in Charcol, but my truck interior is Tan. I'm wondering if these could be spray painted to exactly match the color of my current pillar covers using some paint I get from the dealership, or if this would only look *ALMOST* perfect. I ask because since the pillar covers are textured, I'm not sure how painted ones would look. And if they couldn't be cheaply painted to look EXACTLY like they came that way, I might as well just keep looking until I find tan ones (which might take a while). How is this done?

Any aftermarket pillars Ive seen have to be painted to match exactly, you can go to your dealer and get matching paint in a small spray can and just be sure to clean them off with soap before you paint them and they should look just like the stock ones.

So you don't think the fact that the pillar covers are textured will matter? I ask because I seem to remember hearing that some interior automotive paint has to be applied in a certain way that actually ADDS this texturing (as opposed to the texturing being molded into the plastic), and I wasn't sure if that would be a problem. Also, I'm not sure if this exact color of paint is still available since my truck is a 2001.

I don't know about the dealer, but an auto paint store can mix you up some. I went the auto paint store, for about 60 bucks, and had my Dad shoot it, for free. He's a nice guy that way. In some cases the paint store can make up a spray can of custom mix, but I don't know if they still do that.

The dealer route sounds like a better choice if it's available.

No, I'm not...although DodgeDiesel4x4 wants me to. LOL. Basically, I'm looking to put all the money I'm saving up into the sound system and gauges would take away from that. I'd like to hear more about the paint if anybody knows anything.

I bought my paint from the local dodge dealer for about 5 bucks a can. It matched quite well (mist grey interior)

I painted the first coat with some white krylon "fusion" plastic paint, then painted the interior paint. worked well so far.

Cheers

The dealer spray looks like the best bet.

To paint plastic, it will adhere just like any other paint, if you stop and think about it, you have plastic everywhere on vehicles now days.

The MAJOR difference is in the prep, which plastic requires a bit more care. Don't use lacquer thinner or mineral spirits to clean. Use hot soapy water initially, scuff the surface with a "scotch brite" pad or something similar. Sandpaper will not get into all of the textured surface, and will smooth out the texture you have.

After scuffing, you should have NO shiny spots visible. Clean again with hot/soapy water, dry thoroughly, and just prior to painting, clean with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or a plastic prep cleaner. The last item is especially important if substances like "armor all" or high silicone shiny stuff has been used on the part.

You are ready to paint!

I think the tan color is called "camel" but not 100% sure. When I get my pillar in soon (hopefully today, maybe) I'm gonna head to the dealer to get my agate can. I'll ask what the color is you are looking for.

(Just suck it up and get those DAAAAAAAAAARN gauges!!!!!!!)

P.S.........Chicken thurs nite, dont forget.

$500??? Is that what the gauge pod setup complete with gauges costs??? Dang! I'm going to need as much money as possible for the sound system I'm looking to put in. I mean, it'll probably cost well over $1,500 once I get everything put in. And that's just a super rough guesstimate.

Oh, I called the Dodge dealership today and a parts guy said that I could get the trim paint they sell, but recommended I go to a CarQuest Paint Store in town to get paint that's better matched. And cheaper too. He said that it's special interior trim paint that's super thin and will require 5-6 very light coats to totally cover up the underlying plastic. Said to wait 10-15 minutes between coats and to make the coats really thin. Now I just gotta get those pillar covers...
