PacBrake driving instructions..... ??

I've installed my new Pacbrake per the instructions, and the last thing it says is to go ahead and test drive it according to the "driving instructions".

What driving instructions ??

What do I need to know ?? Are there do's, and don'ts ??

RPM ranges to stay away from while in use ??

What are they specifically ??

Thanks

The PacBrake is meant to work best at about 2100 RPM. This is where it makes its top level of retarding power. As far as over revving. It is designed never to exceed the valvetrain, so you don't need to worry about valves being held open.

You can basically bring the truck to a standstill using the brake, I do it all the time. It is also a good warmup feature, although I would not suggest turning it on when he oil is really cold in the engine, better to wait a little while. Also, if you are idling in extremely cold weather, it helps keep things nice and warm.

Something to watch, if you like your clutch to last, is that you disengage the brake when downshifting. Just like a highway truck, rev it a bit to match rpm, then let the clutch out, and the brake will come on again.

And remember the lag time, if you are going to use the brake a lot, you have to start slowing down a bit earlier for stops, or you will still be relying on a heavy dose of the service brakes. For going downhill, mine will hold me at 60 km/h in 3rd gear, on a 10% downgrade, with an 11,000 lb trailer on.

If you are driving in icy conditions, the brake is enough jam to lock up the back wheels and cause a skid, remember this. Just playing, I have had mine drift in 4wd with the brake on, although the conditions were extreme.

Also, if you are backing a trailer up a hill, or over uneven ground, use the pacbrake, it stops the "surging" inherent to the electronic engine, makes for a much smoother job.

Happy Stopping
