advance your engine timing, and stretch the spring in the overflow valve, and you should have no poping and no white smoke at all...
Careful on stretching that spring there in the overflow, if your not carefull, you will stretch it to far!, its not ment to be stretched, and the exacts of the spring is to fine to be grabbing it and stretching it if you do not know what your doing. not quite sure on the specs of the spring length, but if you think its your overflow spring, get a new one!, your pump will thank you!

Number 1 cylinder is the one that is most dependent on internal injection pump head pressure. That being the case, I would look really closely at the overflow valve being the problem.

Number 1 is also the cylinder that is the least efficient and has the most shrouding around the valves, so slow timing will cause an intermittant miss anytime the engine is not really hot.

Lastly, if the first two are not your trouble sources pull the number 1 injector and do a compression test. Do a static test and a leak down test. It could be a bad headgasket.

Do not worry about that pump not supporting 400 horses. A dead P pump will outflow anything else ever offered by Cummins on this series of engine.

if you stretch the spring to far you will have a runaway, good luck shutting it down safely. i had alot of missing and white smoke when it was cold after i installed my injectors i bumped my timing up to 17.5* and now i have no missing at all even when it was 15 degrees outside tonight
