First off I don't know much about turbos...I'm wondering how I can adjust my wastegate or even block it off for more boost. How dangerous is this? My turbo is a stock HX-35.

 

Do you have a boost elbow installed?

 

I haven't touched the turbo...if it's something not stock..then no.

 

My edge comp came witha boost elbow that I installed with the box. I can hit 36 lbs. of boost, and from what I understand my stock turbo isn't going to tolerate to much more than that for very long. I am not sure where to buy an elbow but I know you can get preset elbows and manual elbows.

Others use a turnbuckle to somehow control their wastegates.

 

Mine must have an aftermarket boost elbow on it then...or at least I hope it does. The previous owner installed the comp 3 months before I bought the truck. I will check it out tommorrow.

 

they sell the adjustable boost elbows on ebay for $10. not a bad investment in my book.

 

YOu don't need more boost if you do not have excessive EGT.

More boost gives you nothing without more fuel. Boost is a necessary evil-- you want the minimum you need and no more.

If it's the stock turbo, the automatics have the HY-35 which is probably already out of its efficiency range with that Comp on there.

 

I pretty sure its not an hy..It does say HX-35 on it...

 

Some 2000's had the HX35 and some had the HY35. I think if I recally correctly they switched about half way through the year and went with the HY35.

One54, If you look in Hohn's photo gallery you will see a picture of the sort of boost elbow that edge boxes come with. It is on the second page.
So you can compare with what you got to see if you have a stock elbow or not.

 

On a 98.5 - 2000 truck, all stock, the ECM will defuel when boost hits 21 psi. Many of these trucks were set to make only 16-17 psi before the wastegate opens. I have re-adjusted several wastegates to provide around 20 psi boost. It gives these trucks a little extra, and allows them to provide the power they are supposed to, while still remaining stock. The wastegate actuator is adjustable, but it is staked on the 24 valve trucks. It is easy to drill out the staking, adjust the rod, and restake it.
