Magnaflow 4" Exhaust

Does anyone here have this system? From the pic, I can't tell if the downpipe is 4" or 3"-3.5" that steps up to 4". It kind of looks like a stepped up downpipe and I was really wanting a full 4" downpipe. I like to hear your comments on the quality, fucntion, etc. if you've bought/installed the 4" Turbo-back Magnaflow system.

I don't own it, and there's a reason.

The Magnaflow system is made from 409 Stainless (cheap), and the downpipe is only 3.5"

If you're going to spend the money for shiny stuff, why not get 304 stainless? (it's the good stuff). A system from 304 stainless is truly a lifetime system.

For a mostly stock up to 475ish hp, the Banks system is great, but also overpriced.

I think your best value is going to be a system from Rip Rook at www.sourceautomotive.biz

Systems???

Mechanos,

That particular system is the 436 stainless material, it's good steel, but no where near as good as T-304. The other XL systems they make is made from 409 stainless. All of their down pipes for the Dosges are 3.5 inches, no options there at all.

We have a full line of MBRP Dodge aluminized, T-409 and T-304 stainless systems, even duals for a really sharpe appearance that you don't see everyday. Our 409 systems come with 304 welded hangers and of course our Spiral Flow muffler. All of our stainless systems have 100% welded 304 hangers that use the factory mounts for an extremely easy install in the drive way. Give us a call or check our site for all the specs and options. Most folsk aren't too interested in a system unless it has a 4.0 inch down pipe for flow needs as youre mods and HP increase you'll probably want a 4.0 one too.

Thanks for the info guys......

And Mark, I have checked your website and looked at your systems and they look like good quality stuff.... but to be honest, I'm still recovering from sticker shock.

I got mine from Summit Racing. It is a aluminized 4" with the same muffler that Rip whoever uses. The downpipe goes from the turbo flange to 4" in about 2". Everything fit nice. It is a universal fit, 94-02 all beds, etc. so I had to cut the one pipe down. It took about 1.5 hrs to remove the old and install the new because I had to move the crossmember back to get the downpipe in. $299 plus about $15 shipping.

HTH,

Steve.

Steve,
Was the Summit system a "turn-key" system? Did it come with everything needed to install (hangers, clamps, etc.)? Does it use the stock hanger locations?

Yes I have that system
The part# was 15910 for my truck and as far as the type of SS I cant comment.
But I can say I love it. It fit like a glove out of the box with all the stock hangers.
The down pipe expands to 4" right at the turbo flange as most Ive seen. Im very happy with the fit and finish and would recomend it to anyone. installed in less than 1/2 hour. I got the local auto parts store to get it in and it cost less than having the local diesel shop put a alluminized steel system on

I have read before (since I'm in the proccess of looking for a 4" setup, too) that you see some 3.5" down pipes for two reasons: 1) is that it fits better and
2) the dyno shows that power is better when you dont dump right to a 4" from the turbo. Havent decided either.

From what I understand, the fit of a 4" dp isn't that bad relative to a 3.5"

The dyno MAY show more hp for a 3.5" dp, but I assure that's with a truck that's pretty close to stock.

If you're running near the limits of the stock charger, or have a larger charger, then the 4" dp will be the way to go.

We hashed all this out in the "backpressure shootout" thread. You can read my (lengthy) thoughts there.

Yes, everything was there and it uses all the stock locations. For the $$, it's a great deal. I got my new Summit catalogue last night, $299.88. What a bargan!! The only thing it doesn't come with is the BlingBling stainless tip OH WELL.

Mechanos,

Thanks for the compliments, make sure you look at the T-409 systems they are a lot less than 500.00 (can't post prices per site rules) and get you the 304 wleded hangers too.

Still deciding....... according to ratsun, the Magnaflow system has a 4" downpipe regardless of what the picture shows. The Summint systems sounds good for an aluminized system, but for about $80 more, the Magnaflow system is SS. Now, I'm sure it's not T-304 and is more likely one of the 400 series steels. Even at that, 409 or 436 SS should still be better than aluminized, right?

Wink

Mechanos,
You might consider the weather. If you drive where they salt the roads the T304 will last a lot longer. It will pay for itself. Just a thought.

Mechanos,

Haven't seen a Magnaflow in approx 6 weeks or so but they have always had a 3.5 inch down pipe in the past, just an FYI to make sure so you get what you expect if you go that way. The XL line they have is 409 stainless, better than aluminized but not 304 by a long way. Check our MBRP T-409 at slightly more than 400.00 (be sure to call we have a little higher price on the site than the sale price). It will get you a one piece tail pipe, welded 304 stainless hangers and the spiral Flow muffler too.

mechanos,
One other consideration is the Magnaflow system comes with a lifetime warrentee
so the type of SS must be OK
