LUK clutches

Looks like I will be in the market for a replacement clutch. She's a slipping under super hard accel (emtpy) and hard accel (with TT in tow).

Currently has the CON O installed, unsure of mileage that the clutch has seen at the present moment in time because I'm a new owner of an old truck - 180K miles on the clock so your guess is as good as mine on # miles clutch has seen. Went to SBC website and seen the warning deal where they say I should have the $1000 clutch (EEK!) Man whatever happened to the days of new clutches only costing a hundred bucks...

So I went on a search for another brand that might be a little better suited to my bank account level at the moment. I remembered that most of the Ford boys used to chant LUK so figured I would give them a gander. Looks I can get into a LUK for around 3 bills, but (there's always a butt involved) I question whether it will hold under the conditons I demand.

TT weight around 9200 - 9500 lbs wet, don't know truck weight so I don't know GCW but my expereince tells me I'll be tossing in about 400-500 lbs in the bed when we go roughing it (wife would take kitchen sink if I'd let her).

You can see mod level in sig - don't know HP/TQ she's throwing down but I can say it's more than I need/want/desire. But I'm known to throw the hammer down from time to time coming off the light when there is a little ricer next to me with the loud music pumping (one of my pet peeves).

http://www.dialaclutch.com Best price I have found, look at the pro gold series, I pull to much and am going with the southbend Mu 13 1.25 conofe. If I was not going to pull heavy I would of opted for the luk pro gold. Goodluck Rick

After I burned the OEM clutch out, I had the Pro Gold installed. Lasted ne about 8 months. I was towing about 12K, and not all that hard. Since that time I've used the SB clutchs. I had the con o fe that I didn't like. Changed to the con o and have had it ever since. I did break one of the springs on the dampner but that's it. I now tow the Teton at 15K and have had no trouble with the clutch. There are cheaper ones out there but not in my truck. You can check with Carolina Clutch also. They seem to be the best price outside the big ones we know.

Good luck.

Well got in touch with previous owner and he says she's only got maybe at worst case 25k miles on this SBC CON O... Humm... I would expect a SBC to last a little longer for thier going price. He suggested that I contact SBC to see what they have to say about this matter... I think I will contact them this week when I get a chance... Might even get a bug up my butt and drive over to South Bend on Friday (it's not all that far for me). Plus would give me an excuse to check out Camping World store in Elkhart...

Give Peter a call. Just don't attack him about it. Most likely he will help you or even help you upgrade to the bigger clutch for a heck of a deal.

That attack part is right on. Call with a chip on your shoulder, and it will stay there, and you will be on you on. Peter is so used to hot heads, he needs a little kindness from time to time. A little of that, and he's like melted butter. Just a real fuzz ball. Seriously, you'll be in good hands.

Ive used the OEM unit in my 93 for over a million miles and never had a failuer, or one wear out. I pretty changed them every 250K, I towed a 53 ft. trailer grossing 26K almost always and never had a seconds trouble.

I am considering a Pro-gold unit from a 2nd gen truck from Carolina Clutch its less cash, but wonder how it will do. Its supposedly rated for 700 -750 lb. ft of torque, so im in the same boat as you.

you might want to ask the guy who owned the truck if he ever pulled a sled with it. Thats a single disk killer right there

Talked with Peter today (before reading these posts) man what great customer service. He did give me some things to check like to see if the fuel plate is slide forward - he said this is a big killer of clutches because of how the power comes on. He said that with the fuel plate set up correctly I will get the same amount of power but just a little later - which is not a problem because this ol girl throws out more than enough to get the job done in my opinion.

Peter offered to warranty the clutch assembly completely 100% no cost to me if we need to replace it. He even went on so far to say that if we need to upgrade to the 13 incher that he will will make me a deal on trading in the current CON O.

He was concerned about how the previous owner handled the clutch (riding it, slipping it constantly) but with my conversations with the PO I highly doubt that was the case, but I asked him and he assures me he was not like that. So I guess I need to read up on how to move the fuel plate (I have the gauge in the loose parts that the PO gave me).

What surprised me is Peter is offering to warranty the clutch assembly even though I'm not the original purchaser (that is something that normally kills a normal warranty except vehicle factory warranties). Seems from reading on here and on TDR that is pretty much the standard for SBC. That seals the deal right there for me any future clutches will come from Peter in South Bend, Ind.

Like I've said before, if Peter sold cat food and all I had was horses and dogs, they better get used to cat food. Thats what I'd buy.
