looking at trucks have a few questions

first off sorry if this is in the wrong place, didnt know really where to put it. ok for the questions.

ive been looking at trucks for a little while now. I have found a couple, but have some questions about them.
the trucks are 98s, how can I tell if there 12v or 24v without seeing the truck. basically by the vin if its possible.

2. is manual or auto better for performance.

3. some performance questions, if I get a diesel I want to make it fast. which motor has the most potential.

4. how fast should I expect and how much would it cost. if there a staged buildup out there some where that says each stage, how much it costs and what to expect. basically I know 13s, 12s even 11s are possible with these trucks, I just dont know what kind of money it takes to get there.

5. diesels perform by adding more fuel, this to me would make me think that when you start getting past the basic computer and intake stuff and into the bigger stuff that starts to add a lot more fuel it could hurt youre milage significantly, am i right in assuning this, also if it is that way how bad is the milage with a very pomped up truck.

sorry i know its a lot. thanks in advance.

1) 8th digit in the VIN "D"=12 Valve, "6" =24 Valve.

2) The auto will be faster, but will need "help" to live at high HP levels. The Std will need a dual disc clutch too.

3) both are pretty easy to get to 500RWHP, above that 12 vlave, but "real streetability" might become an issue.

4) Depends on which way you go......4-5K for the automatic to live in the 12-13 second range. Injectors, turbo........it goes on and on.

5) Depending on how crazy you go--your mileage might suffer a little, but not much. The truck in my sig. is now over that 310 number, done a few more things- and I still get 23 on the highway on trips. I won't quess a number, but I think my new HP is in the 370-400 ish range.

A built auto is what you want for drag racing. Or a stick for sled pulling.

24v ican get up to 600+ on diesel. Add a couple hundred more for the 12v if you have a good pump. The 24v's variable timing makes it a better daily driver when heavily fueled though.

Your biggest expenses will be the built auto- $4-6k and twin turbos- $2-4k

If your looking to go fast you will need 4wd to hook up at the track or wherever, and of course 4x4 if you want to sled pull. These things have alot of trouble hooking up in 2wd
