Looking for thoughts on gauge install...

Hello DTR,

I've spent the past six weeks working on a long list of repairs/mods to my CTD. Next to last on my project list is a triple gauge install [A-pillar], which consists of ISSPRO EV: EGT, mech fuel pressure and turbo boost.

The gauge job has been more difficult than expected, but, most surprisingly, the boost gauge is presenting the biggest challenge [so far]. One would think this one would be the simplest of the bunch!

Anyway, I thought I was avoiding boost gauge trouble by ordering a "boost bolt" for my 24v. However, I've installed the fitting into 3 different manifold holes [all 3 next to the valve cover] and get nothing.

I've removed the bolt to check for obstructions--nothing there! I've blown air through my tubing--blows fine! I've even tried starting the CTD with just the bolt in the manifold. Apart from a little bit of air blowing out of the top [at very low pressure], I get nothing there as well.

I used the photo on the PDR website (see below) as my guide when I originally installed the thing, so I really didn't expect any trouble at all. Can anyone out there give me some possible reasons for this problem? Is it possible that the intake manifold is different on the '98.5 24v?

I'd really appreciate any thoughts,
Bill

Mine is installed exactly like yours, except I'm one hole back. I have the same fitting and everything.

N ot sure why it doesn't work, unless it's a guage problem.

Thanks, Homestead!

The thing that really has me buzzing is why I don't feel anything when I put my finger over the bolt [without any tubing attached]

BTW, I forgot to mention the snubber I attached to the rear of my boost gauge. As I understand it, that's where it's supposed to go

I did consider the dead gauge theory, but I thought the same thing about the mech fuel gauge at first and now it works fine. Anyway, that's why I'm reluctant to blame the gauge.

Thanks again,
Bill

This may sound like a stupid question, but have you driven the truck to test the gauge or just revved it in neutral? There needs to be a load on the engine to make boost. Put it back where Piers said to put it, then go for a ride and report back.

Dave, those are the type of "thoughts" I'm looking for--NO ideas refused at Bill's!

To answer your question: NO, I haven't driven the truck yet. In fact, it hasn't been driven in nearly two months

I'll do exactly what you suggested and get back to you.

Thanks very much,
Bill

Thumbs up

Dave,

Either you um genius or me um stupid or, perhaps, a bit of both .

Well...it is my 1st boost gauge, so I'll give myself a break here.

The boost is indeed at zero when idling/rolling, but jumps up quickly when the go go juice is applied . The gauge tops out at around 19 psi when max weight is applied to the pedal and rolling acceleration is max, which seems about right.

On another front, the mech fuel gauge never falls below 15 psi. After about 9 and a half months of fuel delivery issues, this is definitely a sight for very sore eyes !

Thanks very much to all posters...I guess the simplest explanation is, more often than not, the best one.

Have a great one,
Bill
