Light Dimmer for Gauges

I want to tap my gauge lighting into the adjustable voltage lighting for the dash (that dims when you turn the lights on). Where's best place to access it? I can saulder fairly well, so I just need to know which wire.

Pull the dimmer switch out of the dash and take a test light and probe each wire till you find the one that dims the test light as you turn the switch. I think it was the pink wire with black tracer on my 01 but don't hold me to that.

Actually i think its the brown wire with the white tracer..........i did a lot of trucks....that might be for a Ford or 3rd gen Dodge......either way....the wire is on the end of the plug horizontally.........just test it with a test light....very easy to find......

....I put in a 2K rotary pot, in the Rod Pod, 2.5K ohm - would recommend a 1.5 or 1K - and ran the power wire from the stereo source, which I had previously run thru the ignition switch. That seemed as easy as digging around for a variable source which may or may not give me the brightness I need, and can be changed independently from the dash lights....

I used the ashtray light wire too. It's a 95 so I don't if the newer trucks are the same.

if you have an aftermarket radio and have the adapter harness you can tap off the orange wire on the aftermarket harness to get the same source that the dash lights are.... then the light dimmer will work all the lights..... that's just easier to me.... i did it in under 5 min.... and no need to be able to solder just use butt connectors they are so much easier....

Or you could buy those little things that you crimp the wire (little metal j hook deal) to and use the fuse for the dash lights, for some reason #8 is coming to mind. There like a buck for a package at napa. It will dim with the dash lights and you dont have to pull anything apart or probe wires. Mines been like that for 3+ years.
