all i can really tell about it is it doesnt defuel all the way to the 3600 that i can get out of it, and may be responsible for some timing too, but not much...probably some horsepower increase as well but it was on there when i got the truck so i cant vouch for that

I think there were a lot more than 12 produced

Chapel did get in some trouble a while back. I know of a guy who does it from time to time. He maxes the low level fueling out, bumps the timing a little bit more. I had him do it to my truck, but we put it back. I didn't like being able to not turn off the smoke if I was towing. I thought my edge comp did a better job.

Yeah, I know. The Smarty is probably really a bargain. But it would be nice to fiddle with the curves yourself on a laptop.... Of course, you would probably be shooting in the dark without having the thing on a chassis dyno to verify gains & losses. The laptop I have. The chassis dyno on the other hand.....

Smarty as you know it today started out as what you're talking about here, a PC based system. No joke! I wanted to come up with something similar to the EFI system. At the end....

You'll encounter several problems if you want a PC to talk with your truck.
The main ( but not only ) hurdles you'll have to jump are: voltages and communication speeds. You will need some kind of interface between the PC and the vehicles electronics to communicate.

So now you start to design and fiddle with that interface. Then you'll need to write a software that takes controll over the Windows based communication speeds.(!) Then you need to write the "tuning software" in order to modify the ECM or PCM or whatever software....

Now, if you're doing it as a hobby all that might seem appealing. Once you really start to look into that project you will find very soon that you have to invest some serious money into it. Logic state analyzer with DEEP memory, high end scope just to mention a couple.

You see where I'm heading, that ain't no job for the average DIY guy. One has to invest some serious CASh and TIME into such a project. It CAN be done but has a steep price. You know that I know...
That kinda task can be done ONLY if you're really deep into software and electronics. Are you?

The last consideration about a PC based system. There's really no way to make sure that one customer uses it on only one vehicle. You've invested your time and money...

To come to an end. Smarty IS an "interface" between the vehicle and the PC.

Marco

On edit. Ever heard about J2534?

............... Marco has a point. The Smarty is ready-to-go and all the guess work is already done. Guess I need to start saving for a Smarty!

You know Marco...

I had just had something of an epiphony. You know how you're telling me you can take the unit from one truck to another? I know how you can absolutley prevent it.

I assume you already have the software we are discussing. Perhaps you could shoot me an e-mail and I could write you back and tell you just how to avoid people using such a product on multiple vehicles. PM me if you're interested.

Don't forget that without trying new things, we have zero chance for advancement.

Thanks,
Sean

No need to get off line. We just don't need to say HOW TO and we're OK...

As a last note on the PC based system. Then greater the part done by the PC then easier it becomes to crack the system. The "security" system has to reside in the interface and at that point you've build something very close to Smarty.

One of the future maybe/could be/ we'll see/ plans for Smarty...
Provide the customers with the software in order to update Smarty with...
We'll see. Right now the third gen Smarty is the most important thing in the works.
