Re:jacobs ??

you'll have to do a search for the button picture, but their is one i just dont remember who it was. The jacobs is an exhaust brake which is not as noisy as a jake brake which kills the cylinders by shutting off the fuel to them thats where the noise comes from.

Re:jacobs ??

The photo is on the Cummins web site.

http://www.cummins.com/na/pages/en/p...haustbrake.cfm

If you can hear it, the only sound it will make is a hiss. It is an exhaust brake, not a Jake Brake of the valve float variety that makes the loud popping sound you are probably thinking of.

Re:jacobs ??

Look in Member Photos section on Page 2 under dieseldude4x4's pics and hobbies. This is the one I use and it looks like Cummins copied it and put it in a fancier housing and put the big C on it. The brake does not have a good sound to it at all but it works very well.

Re:jacobs ??

Hello
I have an Jacobs "EXHAUST BRAKE" on my truck. It works great, I love it. It does not sound like a big rig with an "ENGINE BRAKE".
The exhaust brake restricts the exhaust flow out of the engine. This slows down the truck.
The engine Brake in a sense shuts off the fuel and turns the engine into a air compressor. Which slows the truck down. The Engine brake has the big rig sound with the rumble, the exhaust brake is a hiss sound.
Hope this helps.
See Ya
Chris

Re:jacobs ??

To my knowledge, there is not an engine brake for our trucks. Just the exhaust brake.

Re:jacobs ??

I went with the PAC Brake and it works very well. There is a hissing sound at idle and it does sound like a big rig under a load, going down hill, but not a loud.
Big dawg

Re:jacobs ??

This came from the JakeBrake.com website.
Without an engine brake, all the valves remain closed at the top of the compression stroke, and we start the power stroke. In a no-fuel condition, the air pressure exerts a force on the piston and returns most of the power to the crankshaft. With a Jacobs Engine Brake active, the exhaust valves are opened close to top dead center of the compression stroke. "Pop" goes the energy stored in the air safely out through the exhaust system. Theoretically, none of the power is returned to the crankshaft, and the engine is able to provide retarding power for the vehicle. The "Pop" is the sound you hear.
