intake and exhaust question

New to the board, seems to be some really good advice on here !!

I'm just starting with upgrades on a "98 12V LWB ext. cab 4x4, I have pyro and boost gauges ordered along with the kdp kit and a 3" suspension lift kit.
I'm looking for opinions and or options for the intake and exhaust. Has anyone installed the Diesel Performance Systems 5" exhaust system? comments?
and also the K&N F.I.P.K. air intake? Price seems very reasonable compared to some of the "big" names. After these upgrades I'll be looking into new wheels. I'm not looking to bomb my truck, just looking for a little more performance

TIA
Greg

A napa bhaf part number 2790 will be an inexpensive air filter.Do a search for BHAF on this site.As far as an exhaust,if you dont plan on going extreme then a 4 inch system is plenty.I would go with a system from rip rook. And you havn't mentioned a fuel plate at all,you can grind one for free or buy one for like 200 bucks.

about the air filter.. I had a K&N square filter in the box, then I bought a small cone filter (oil) on eBay for $15 that was about 6 inches long with an inverted cone at the end (also found at auto zone). It added 5 MPH to my top speed (no other mods). Then I was reading about these BHAF's so I got one for about $70. It lowered my tope speed 5 MPH and made my turbo whistle go away. So, I returned that almost immediately, but I still wanted more air availability, because I knew my filter was small. So I checked autozone again and they had a new item... pretty much the same filter except substantially extended. It cost only $38 (called "Power Adder). I had to get a little creative to make it work with my stock intake tube on my 96. These filters are 4 inch ID I beleive. I just put some plastice tube inside to filter adapter (rubber) to stiffen it up, then it would just fit right into my intake.

Definitely go with the 4" exhaust. I got mine on eBay from Pinnacle Performace with a straight through muffler for $310 including shipping. You can get the straight pipes for $40 less.

I also got a #8 torque plate on ebay for about $100.. a very nice improvement, though, it's not the easiest thing to install. Read all the instructions from TST and make sure you have the tools. It took me less steps than the instruction offered and less tools as well. Getting the breakoff screww out is probably the toughest part.

Be careful with the oil filters, some guys have experienced some of the oil getting into the turbo inlet.I have seen it in both of my trucks when they had k and n .You simply cant beat the filtration of a paper filter but of course the gauze type flow better.
