Question injectors upgrade

If a person changed the injectors out say from 245 hp to 300hp do you have to do anything to the pump? like turn the pump up or get a new one. I'm new to the diesel world. I would like to go to the 300 hp injectors and do I need the piller gages too?

Hi Carl,

Please fill in your sig so we know what rig you have.

We need to know a couple of things:

You intent for upgrading....better towing power for the trailer...or...more for all around fun AND pulling the trailer!

If correct from looking at your photo gallery (that's a nice 24V sport 1-ton trailer combo by the way!!!), you'll probably have good luck going with a set of EDM injectors, maybe a box, and maybe transmission help, but sizes and recommendations will depend on what you want to end up with.

Gauges.....Yup! Absolutely, unquestionably, and with out a doubt - especially when considering something along the lines of 300HP+. You will need a pyrometer (pre-turbo IMHO) and fuel pressure gauge, and typically a boost gauge.

(edited thanks to Rusty's attention to detail! )

Since you mention 245 BHP, I'm assuming you have a 2nd generation HO. My HO would hit 1300 degF pre-turbo EGT pulling our 5th wheel when it was stock!! Adding injectors (with no other changes) would drive EGT's well above stock. Even if you don't add a fueling and/or timing "box", I would install a boost fooler and boost elbow as a minimum when the injectors go in - you'll need the extra air to burn the extra fuel provided by the larger injectors.

No, you don't need to make any changes to the VP-44. It can handle the additional flow of reasonably-sized larger injectors. If your lift pump is marginal, however, you may need to change it out or upgrade it.

The only way you'll know any of the above is gauges. If you have an HO/6-speed, I would add a pyrometer (EGT) gauge with the probe mounted pre-turbo, a boost gauge and a fuel pressure gauge as a minimum.
