I have some disposable income, does a valve body sound like a wise way to spend it?

I really hate the way my trans shifts. The trans is in good shape and I take care of it. I pull 4000lbs occasionally, I only drive it like I stole it every once in a while, I don't power brake, and I change the fluid when I should. It just seems sloppy some times.

Would changing the valve body without changing the torque converter make that much of a difference in how it shifts? What I really want to do is drop a 6 speed in it, but that is out of the question for now. It seems it would be advised to upgrade the torque converter at the same time as the valve body, but I don't really want to spend that much right now either.

If I upgrade the VB, what do you guys recommend? I see some have race and tow editions. What would be best for my purpose? What are the differences between each?

A valve body will definately make your tranny firmer. A valve Body, and torque converter will really make it firm. As for what you would need; just call the company you want to buy your VB from(Goerend, DTT ,Suncoast ,etc), and tell them what you want to do to the truck, and let them tell you what you need. I reccomend Goerend or DTT. Big Blue is running just a DTT VB, and it just started slipping not long ago with the stock converter still. It is definately a worthwhile mod for your truck .
