I have been patient long enough
Some of you may remember a thread I opened a bit ago about some issues I am having with my ATS Trans. Our family had gone home over Christmas and took the truck. Any time I was pulling a hill in lockup or the trans was going into lockup I was getting some hard pulsing AFTER the t/c was in lockup. This is not an issue with the TC going in and out of lockup but more of an issue after in lockup. The other issue is one I have had since I pulled out of the ATS facility in Arvada, CO in Apr.06. If the trans oil temp is below 60 degrees the engine will stall when you put it in gear. You must put the truck in neutral, start it and once the trans temp is 70 or so you can get it in to gear.
Keep in mind that to get this trans I drove almost 400 miles at my own expense to thier facility in Arvada, CO to have this done. This is how bad I wanted an "ATS Transission", and I wanted it done by ATS not one of their sattelite dealers, I am wierd that way.
Well I would like to log how this is going so you guys can figure out for yourselves if this is a company you want to deal with.
On Jan. 6 2009 I called ATS and spoke with Mike. Told him I needed 2 things. A copy of my original invoice and a decision on what they were going to do with my trans, this after I expained the issues I was having. He said he would do some research and call me back. Took down all my info. The trans has 16000 miles on it and is still under warranty.
2 days later I had not heard from Mike and called him back. He was not available, I left a message with secretary and she said he would call back. Never did. I called him the next day. I got a hold of him. No mention of the fact that he never called me back. He wanted me to get the truck down to the local ATS authorized dealer close to where I live and have them look at it. He also took my name, phone number and email down AGAIN and said he would send the original invoice to me. Never did.
When it is all said and done I will reveal the name of the dealer that is going to make the repair, but for now I will not say do to a possible further difficulties if he sees this.
This is where it gets even more aggravating. Got my truck down to the autorized dealer to have him test drive the truck. Left the truck with him. Never heard back. Had to call him two days later. Says, oh yeah looks like you might need a TC.
The communication between this guy and ATS is horrid. Finally I have to just tell him to make all the communications with ATS, leave me out of that loop, just keep me informed. He says it will be a couple days before he gets the TC to put it in. I go pick up my truck and never hear another word from him. I call him up a week later. Oh yeah he says, I'll see if the T/C is here ( it was supposed to have been sent to him from ATS). I'll call you back in fifteen minutes. Never heard back from him. I called Mike with ATS. Was not available, secretary says I'll have him call you. Never heard back from him. Still no copy of original invoice as well. I called Mike a gain the next day, he says they are building the TC at ATS there in CO and it should get sent off the next day. Another week goes by. Last Fri. I called the dealer guy, he says "oh yeah, let me go see if that TC is here, I'll call you back IN ONE MINUTE". Never got a call back. I am so mad right now I could spit nails. ALL I WANT IS TO BE KEPT INOFORMED! I finally called ATS again for the original invoice and asked for someone other than Mike to get me the invoice. I got some secretary lady and she had me an invoive faxed over in 10 minutes. I had lost the original invoice which had the mileage on it when the trans was installed. I needed that to see how many miles I had on the trans.
I am contemplating calling the owner, Clint Cannon Mon. morning to see what the heck the deal is and see if he can fix this situation. What do you guys think I should do? I am so tired of poor customer service in the performance sector. And when you confront these guys about it they get nasty with you. I wish I had bought a Goerend Trans. I am so tired of ATS. They must not look at these forums because it is very apparent that their reputation is quite lack-luster. For good reason from my experience. This other joker I am dealing with here is on my last nerve. He asks me for my phone number every time I call. How do these guys stay in business? I will continue to log my progress here, or lack of progress for that matter. I think guys need to be aware of the crap that these companies pull so guys can steer clear. ATS may have some good performance stuff, but from my experience, I would stay as far away from them as possible. Their customer service is lacking to say the least.

if you cant get an answer out of one person go to someone else. bother everyone in the company until you get your answer. I would imediately ask for the owner and explain my dissatisfaction with their company and communication. forsomething to be dragged out that long you are very patient. I would not deal with half of that. if they did the install and they want a dealer to look at it who is obviously incompetent I would be very suggestive in ats paying the tow bill for the truck to be brought to their facility to be repaired correctly

pokapotato:
Sorry to hear of your problems.
I have been doing business with ATS since 2000 and have always had excellent customer service from them. I would try to call back again Monday and speak with Clint if you have not gotten calls back. Have you tried e-mailing Mike at all? I think his e-mail is mike@atsdiesel.com. I also know that Eric McCabe tries to keep an eye on DTR for any problems customers might have so I will see if he has seen your thread here Sir.

Let's not make this thread into an ATS bashing session guys!
If so, it is going to get closed. Shane has gotten on here and explained his problem with ATS, they have been contacted, so let's give them a chance to reply and help him out.
Thank you.

I'd like to know what the problem is as well, because I used to have the same problem with the pulsating after lock-up (I might still have it, just haven't paid attention to it the past few days). I've been told by my transmission builder that with these tight TCs that when the transmission is cold the fluid can't flow as well and will stall the engine. Mine does it when it's cold every single time. If I have to drive the truck right away then I'll start the truck, wait for the oil pressure gauge to respond, then shift the transmission into drive or reverse, whichever, and it will engage without stalling. If I wait too much longer after I start the truck without letting it warm up then it will stall. I've always wanted to know what causes the truck to pulsate like that and I have always thought that it was the transmission, but once I turned down the power on my old programmer it wouldn't pulsate anymore so I had no idea. I haven't noticed it with the Adrenaline, but I haven't been driving around on a higher power level either. I hope you get your situation resolved and definitely keep us updated.
John P - thank you for bringing this to my attention & for giving us the chance to respond.
Shane - First & foremost, I apologize that you don't feel you have received the service you expected & certainly deserve. Second, I appreciate your discretion in not posting the dealer's name at this point without knowing what the problem in getting this fixed was or where it was coming from. I won't make any excuses for any of it - if you weren't called back on multiple occassions that's not right, but we will make sure things are made right regardless.
What I can tell you is that there was a genuine misunderstanding between us & the shop relating to a torque converter being shipped for you. As I understand it, the dealer had ordered a new TC for another customer the same day yours was written up, so we shipped 2. Apparently, at some point later they sold another Dodge converter and ordered it but it didn't ship that same day. When yours showed up with the other they mistakenly went to the 2 new customers. When the 3rd showed up a day or 2 later, they looked at the ticket & saw it was for a job they'd already closed & assumed we'd mistakenly double-shipped it. They called in, spoke with somebody else here about it (who didn't have much reason to question it) and sent it back to us. Since it didn't seem like anything eventful (just an accidentally doubled order for all the rep over here knew), it was never brought up & Mike wasn't made aware of the returned converter & therefore thought you had been taken care of.
I know none of that is your fault & you may or may not care one way or another, but I did want you to know we hadn't forgotten about you or what we were doing for your problem. I just hope that given this information you can understand how the uncommon circumstances surrounding this created some confusion. Things are back on track now that we're aware of the mix-up & another new torque converter is on the way. Not this this is relevant to getting you fixed, just out of my own curiousity & making sure I understand correctly, was this ever mentioned to ATS before January? From what you've posted, stating it was a problem from day 1, it looks like you waited over 2-1/2 years to let us know...? I know the techs here wouldn't have released the truck if it was doing that when they finaled it after the install which doesn't mean it couldn't have started after a couple heat cycles, but I'm just trying to get a sense of the timeline here.
nate_88 - I'm not sure about the pulsation in lockup being a torque converter issue, but stalling it out can happen when the converter is a little tight - it loads the engine enough to drag the rpm down, and if it drags it down quickly enough the engine cannot compensate in time to keep from stalling. Do you have marine injectors or any aftermarket injectors by any chance? This issue seems to be commonly tied to aftermarket injectors in combination with a converter on the tighter side.

Sure, although I think we'd be better off going through PM on the diag rather than potentially hi-jacking this thread. If it does turn out to be converter related we can always come back here to post up the results. Drop me a PM & we'll go through it if that sounds fair to you!
Okay, let me be clear here. Up until this point the communication from ATS and the communication from the dealer in question has been unacceptable. As a consumer and also as a field service technician for a Caterpillar dealer, I know the only thing the customer is left with in the event of an ongoing problem, is the communication between the customer and the people performing the service. When this communication is non existent, people can get very angry very fast. Let me also be very clear, I have no problem with the ATS product. I understand that any mechanical part can have issues and solutions must be found, this is not uncommon. That is deinitely not the issue at hand. The issue is lack of communication.
I understand the mixup and that is not a problem. Thanks for helping me here. It sounds as though the real issue is that the dealer NEVER called me back on two occasions over a two week period to indicate that he did not have a TC for me for whatever reason and that he was working on that. I am not in a rush to get the truck done. I just want it done, done right, and done before it is out of warranty.
The biggest issue I have right now and I made clear to Mike as well as the dealer doing the work is that when the truck goes into lockup the whole truck shakes and if you are pulling hard. The killing of the engine was something that I was willing to deal with. The shuddering is not. When ATS was done with the Trans I stayed the night in a hotel there. In the morning when I went to leave CO I started the truck up and went to put it in gear. This is the first time it killed the engine. I called ATS at that moment and was told that the TC would loosen up as I got hours on the trans. Now there have been at least one or two more calls since that time to express concern over the same issue with the same response. The TC will loosen up with time. Like I say though I was willing to live with that. It is the other issue at hand that has me worried.
I am just thankful that the ball is rolling again. Thanks for your help.

Shane:
Thanks for posting. You bring up some good points. I am sure that once the new ATS TC gets installed in the truck, your transmission will perform well.
Please keep us posted.

Okay Shane, that helps a lot. It is fairly common when a truck has the issue stalling out that it will clear itself up since it is just because things are tight. I'm sure the combination of this plus your marine injectors just ended up being too much for break-in to compensate for. I take it then that the shaking is relatively new?
Also, to be sure we know where the part of the breakdown concerning communication with you occurred, it wasn't ATS directly that you were having issues getting calls from so much as the dealer?

Okay Shane, that helps a lot. It is fairly common when a truck has the issue stalling out that it will clear itself up since it is just because things are tight. While I did not keep a log of all the times I called, I can honestly say that in Jan when I was dealing with ATS, there were at least three and probably 4 times that Mike was not available, I left a message with the secretary to have Mike call me back and I never got a call back. I don't want to beat a dead horse. It looks like we have rectified the situation and I am glad for that. Thanks for all the help. Moderators, thanks for allowing this thread to continue. I think it will be helpful to all.
I also need to add that since I have had the T/C I have had Jammer stage 3's, generic stage two's and now RV275s. The TC acted the same with all nozzles. Yes the shaking is within the last 3-4 months.
I broke my ATS billet input shaft and sent my transmission to ATS in September of 07 to get repaired and got talked it upgrading from the triple lock to the 5 star and I am pleased with the service (except the fact the BILLET input shaft failed and the rest are stock). I have been having the stall when cold problem since day 1 with the 5 star and was told the same thing. I am sure it is something you guys didnt expect and didnt know about when you traded me. I wish I could have my Triple Lok back.
