I can't say what hp you will make on a 40. I do know that you have to be careful with the amount of boost. If your still running a stock headgasket, you may be asking for trouble. You won't get the full advantages from the 40 until you get the boost up over 35psi. If your running over that you are in real danger of blowing the gasket. You will be able have cooler egt's and with that you can run some good sized sticks. There are guys that twist over 600 hp on a HX40 but with only the right mods. In my opinion ARP head studs, .020 marine head gasket and o-ring the head. This will give you the insurance of keeping it together and keeping it reliable. I have the BD super B with the boost at 38lbs. Just because I don't trust the stock headgasket. When I do put all the stuff on, I will twist 45 to 48 lbs of boost. Just my opinion.

It is the general consensus here that head studs on a stock gasket will hold 50 lbs, so if you add some studs you should be able to take full advantage of the 40. As far as HP potential, I have no experiece with that but others should chime in.

Which injector you running? Which 40 do you have? You tapping the pump or not. A HX-40 is good for 30-40 rwhp increase on the top end over a HX-35, depending on which compressor wheel and turbine housing you using. 600 rwhp on a 40, wow I like to see that. Must be using tons of NOS or used in twins. I put down a 677rwhp with a HX-40/BTH-3b combo, sometime ago...

lvmknsmoke:

On my old 2002 Dodge CTD 24 valve, I saw an increase of 22 H.P. going from the stock turbo (HY-35/9) to an HX-40/16. But after I installed it, I had to go to a somewhat bigger injector (100 H.P.) as the bottom-end was a little "laggy." The bigger injectors took care of that though. I know that the Holset HX-40's get a "bad rap", but I ran them both in a single capacity and also as the top charger in a twin turbo set-up and have NEVER had any problems with them. Just remember to keep the boost on them at or below 40lbs.

Watch for the turbine inlet flange (stock flange is T03) and keep the turbine housing around 14 to 16cm. Counts the compressor impeller blades? I think the high flow wheel is a 6 or 7 blade, I'm with John, 40's have a bad rap, but I've always had good luck with them. Turbo break/fail if you surge/stall them hard enough. The 35/40 will break shafts, if you bark it good, but don't let that stop ya. They are a cheap upgrade turbo. You could also adjust the compressor A/R housing to improve spool-up.

Mine is a 16cm housing 6 blade wheel wastegated HX40.

I am about at the limit for this turbo without drugs, anymore fuel would require some water/meth to keep egts in a decent range.

Also, if you are gonna save some money on the turbo, spend a little more on injectors, on my truck my smaller Scheid injectors didn't run nearly as nice as the Mach 4s with the same turbo.

I run one as well...great little turbo, but I have too much fuel for it at this point. I am planning on getting some head work done and probably use it with an ht3b
