HX-35 housings

Ok I already have dd3's and tonight i will be putting a Van Aaken v5 on my 02 ETH...now my temps are only being controlled by my foot because at the top of 5th gear pulling NO LOAD doing 75-80 mph i am hitting the 1350 range and backing out of it...and this is without the VA fueling even more.

I wanna get a housing for my hx-35 in the next week or so...should I go with a 14 or 16cm and would i have to modify anything to run a non-wastegated housing. Will it hurt anything to go non-wastegated?

i was thinking a 16 Non-WG would really help the temps out and with the fuel I am getting VA and DD3's I shouldnt have any spool up issues. I just dont wanna grenade a turbo.

You should really look into geting a 14 cm wastegated housing. It will flow more then a 16 cm non wastegated housing.

If you modify the 14 w/g it will be even better.

The only down side is the cost.

The 16cm is about 2" shorter then the current one you are running. They are a pain in the buttox if you do not have enough slack in your exhaust to pull towards the front of the truck.

Cutting back the divider to let the waste gate exhaust gas from all six cylinders instead of just the back three.

Drilling the w/g hole to a larger diameter and putting a replacing the small flapper with a bigger flapper. (For lack of a better term)

Who sells the housings...I had one place but lost the web address. I wanna look at the cost difference between the 14wg and the 16 nwg...cost is very important as i must make the most economical decision that will keep my EGT's safe...

other than the 14wg flowing more air...is there anything else BAD about going with a 14 or 16 non-wg?

The only thing bad is turbo lag. And turbo lag is very different between people.

One may think its really bad, and one may not notice it at all.

I can't remember off hand, but Mark (formely High Tech Turbo) had compared maps and had flow bench testing done. 14 cm w/g housing flows more cfm @ the same backpressure then a 16 non w/g housing due to the fact the 14 was able to pass exhaust through the waste gate.

If you disable the wastegate on the 14, the 16 will out flow it.

A helpfull install suggestion...

When you are hooking up the down pipe up to the 16 cm non w/g housing take a motorcyle ratchet strap and hook it to a hole in the frame towards the front of the truck and stretch it to a exhaust hanger and ratchet it until it is snug.

That will help pull the down pipe foward so you can get the clamp on the housing easier.

What website did those prices come from???

You might be able to get one from the TDR classifieds or DTR's classifieds for quite a bit less.

so i need to go all the way to a 18.5?

I am getting 35psi and then settling in at 30-32 psi when the temps are reaching 1350 and even 1400 but i let out of it when i see it getting hot. I really cant afford a $1,000 full turbo upgrade right now so this is only a temporary fix for a few months until I have the money for an upgraded turbo.

anyone sell 18.5's new because I need to get this SOON and get it installed...i can't shop around for a couple week to try and find a used 18.5 up for sale

thanks for all your help guys

haven't touched the twins... truck is still treating me well though. twins are still in the fire, they're just on the back burner unfortunately...

as for the 18.5, if you're only seeing 30-32, you might try increasing the boost to about 35psi...

make sure you don't have any boost leaks...

if you're only able to make 30-32psi with a blocked wastegate, an 18.5 might not help... IE, might be too big.

now, if you're able to make 40+ w/ a blocked gate, then the 18.5 should help...

realize that untill you go twins, you're never going to be able to just hold it at WOT without getting hot... there isn't a housing on earth that'll do that

but what you can do is let the EGT's climb slower... if you're letting out as soon as the EGT's hit 1350-1400, you might be letting out a little early

obviously you don't want to make a long sustained run at those temps, but a few seconds here and there above 1400* won't hurt anything. my junk sees 1600*+ regularly, it just doesn't see it for very long!

well good...i usually dont stay at 1400 for more then 4-5 seconds

i will try wiring my wastegate...but i know that after 35psi its just making hot boost.

also i do have a leak...my lower intercooler boost has a 1" hole in it i need to replace or fix
