How to tell if your VP44 is going away???

Two years ago I could hit 1,350° with my TST PM3 comp on 3. Now I cant hit 1,250° with it on 9 and the truck seems very very lazy on the top end..

Furthermore, the last three fuel filter changes it keeps getting harder and harder to start the truck after the filter change.... Three changes ago, it took three 15 second cranks, and it lit off fine. Two changes ago, I was more like eight 15 second cranks and I had to get the battery charger out ...... This last time I messed around with it for two hours I cant even remember how many long 20 second cranks I tried.... (I totally expect the starter to die in a few days now) ....The ONLY way I could get it to start was to crack the fittings at every injector and crank the engine till fuel came out then tighten them while the wife was crankin... Even after that it was a long 30+ second crank with it hittin on 1 cyl. then 2 then 4 etc etc... rocking and knockin and smokin until about a minute later it cleaned up and was hittin on all 6. Its like even with the slightest amount of air in the system the VP cant push it out and popoff the injector..

With both these facts in mind, It sure seems to me that the VP is going bye bye....

It is original, has 99K miles on it, and has seen three dead lift pumps in the first 30K miles, the first of which could have been dead for who knows how long...

Whaddya all think?? Time for a new Hot Rod VP44 ??????/

What are your fuel pressure readings?
Could just be another toasted lift pump.

Nah, I put that problem to bed at 30k when I installed an accumulator between the LP and the VP. Been on that same lift pump for 69K miles now and it still was delivering 10Psi .

During this last filter change, I eliminated the bango's, put in a tank bottom pickup, 1/2" lines the whole way and eliminated the stock LP and put in a Holley blue in anticipation of big power in the future. Pressure at the VP with the Holley running and batteries down to 11 Volts was 14 Psi.

And yes I ran the holley for a while and bled the return line fitting on the VP before trying to crank it......

my vp-44 is going but im gonna drive it until it dies, then ill call the dealership to come pick it up because they can't find any problem with it as it only acts up irregularly with throttle stutter where it will sit at a certain rpm and not rev at all while i have it to the floor going down the highway, then all the sudden it starts picking up again

My first VP went 113k and died within 4 seconds of the Comp on 5x5
No warnings, just seized but from day one filter changes were a nasty pig like your last experience and it didnt mater what I tried. I dont know if its related to the VP or not, I kinda think it was a weak pump from day one. I have no doubt that it would still be running the truck today if I didnt ask it to do more than it was originally designed for. Also I have heard some of the Hotrod VPs have thier own problems so I would do some reaserch on them.

When mine went bye bye at 4,000 miles, it just had a problem idling
and anytime the RPM got below 1,000 it surged.
Was fine at anything over 1,000 rpm.

No codes, lift pump was and still is just fine 36,000 miles later.

Your symtons seem the same as mine were truck ran decent, but had no top end power. Also never had any egt issues with mach 3's and drag comp on 5X5. Probably your VP-44 like you think. I replaced mine with one from Cummins Stuff in Texas, $975+400 core.Truck runs great now and I have high egt's now. Thanks Steve B.

Great info guys.

Thanks very much.

Yup, it looks like its dying.

I have heard that a VP with a siezed rotor does not count as a core.. Is this true??? Cuz if it is, I am going to do it early....
