How much will a 53 block take?

How much will a 53 block take?

I was looking real hard at the Xzillaraider, but would that be to much for the block? It's not cracked and just out of warranty, 109000 miles on it. I know I would need guages; I have a straight pipe and BHAF. Anything else I would need to worry about? I see lots of cracked 53 block posts, and pretty much all have been bombed. Any added power kills them, or is it just hit and miss????

Thanks,
Jeromy

its more of a hit and miss i think. Ive seen some 53's runnin high hp (like 500 or better)

So get gauges first! then start to bomb it. I would go easy though...

i have a 53 block with 180,000+ on it. and i haven't had problems with it. i will keep adding power and if it breaks it is just a good excuse to balance and blue print the new block along with a stroker kit

There are MANY 53 blocks out there that are pushing some serious horsepower, with no problems. The same thing could happen to a non 53 block cummins and no one would say anything except for "stuff happens". But since it has the 53 stamped on it people are more likely to worry about it.

I like the way soot shooter thinks, play with it till it breaks, and make it better when it's fixed.

A cracked 53 doesn't really have much to do at all with the power level. It is the heat cycling of the casting that allows a crack to develop in a thin section of the block that was caused by a core shift in the pattern at the foundry. There are thousands of examples of cracked 53's in several different applications and used very differently at different levels of power - and they all cracked. It has since been established that the manner in which the engine was operated and the level of power it was producing will have no effect on the possibility of cracking. It is simply the matter of the number of heat/cool cycles the block experiences before the crack develops.

Roll of the dice then, I always like learning something new, I've done a powerstroke, so if it breaks, I"ll just have to do a Cummins!!

Is the quad a qood choice as far as inexpensive power? Does it tap the pump? What needs done to the tranny, can I get away with a VB? What kind of worries will I have with it??

i have a 53 block with almost 233,000 miles on it now and no problems. i run the new quad xzillaraider stacked with an edge ez. keep in mind that it is stacked with an edge ex now. i got the quad for a smokin deal. it was very very cheap so for the power versus the money it was a steal. i like it. although i never had a tst or a comp so i don't have any idea about the competition. however with just an ez it fell of at around 2500 to 2700 rpms. this xzillaraider pulls past 3200. it is very nice. and it is stackable with a timing box obviously. and do some searching on here for the jumper mod. it will fuel HEAVILY off line at WOT because it no longer see's rpm. great box for the price, just find a used timing box to go with it, and yes it taps the pump wire.
