How much power can you get out of a 24v on the street

What is the most power you can get out of a 24valve and have it streetable WITHOUT twins. How much does a cam, and head work really add or is that only when you get up there? Smoke is somewhat of an issue what is everyone driving on the street? I already have a smoke haze at WOT with the injectors I have now.

Gale Banks claims over 700 HP and 1300 lb.-ft. of torque from his Project Sidewinder. He further claims to have a "functionally streetable diesel sport truck". I don't think he runs twins.

Jamie,

Head porting is not gonna add any power, but it can lower EGT's. Some power can be made through porting although not directly. The lower EGT's enable you to add more fuel. So, more power from fuel with a higher safety margin.

The camshaft will not add power either, but will lower smoke and heat again. The DD camshaft is the best IMO for our trucks. It aint cheap, but rocks and works well.

Once the power gets past 500RWHP, you will see a HP increase with a good camshaft.

In all honesty, with the 24 valve head if it is ported incorrectly...you will actually get more smoke at low rpm because it can kill the velocity the intake runner needs to help the mixing process in-cylinder.

You can make 500RWHP with the right combo of parts and still have a driveable truck. It will smoke though.

Don~

You can probably add propane and get over 500 hp without much smoke, but blowup the engine in the process.

But like a 100 shot would be plenty if you have other things on there but Most guys dont use bottles.

yes, i'd go with the camshaft next, and then step up in injectors, and maybe an HX-50 or something along those lines. you'll obviously always have lag with a big turbo at high elevations. i definately agree with Don that Diesel Dynamics does have the best camshaft....the others ones just aren't the same.

Tom

Re:How much power can you get out of a 24v on the street

I wasn't going to respond to the question, because I thought it would turn into an oil war or tranny war?? I couldn't agree more with the above replies..IMO 500-550HP is achievable and streetable for the 24v. The combination depends on proper turbo, injectors, fueling box, tranny up-grades, exhaust system, which are compatiable with each other. This can be achieved with-out drugs, propane, cam & porting. I know because I've been there, and somewhere along the process of increased power, I've seemed to have gone over the edge and actually backwards.. :'( :'( I'm now in the process of de-tuning my truck ( or should I say de-fueling) to get back in the best set-up for me. I'm not going into which turbo is better, which injector, fueling box etc. There is plenty to choose from, I've tried just about everything, and I know what will work for me. If you are planning to tow, 450HP is probably max. Smoke, heat & altitude have undesireable effects on these performance goals, and depending what you will tolerate, or what your area will tolerate will have a effect on your goal. For me Piers, Don M., South Bend Clutches, Diesel Dynamics, Scotty, ATS , Edge & Ken Jones of Diesel Performance of Utah & others have helped me trememdously, with their products, knowledge and more importantly Service and customer satisfaction.

Steve

This may not help any but....

My truck is over 95,000 miles and I should be in the 450hp range. Haven't broke anything yet.

Re:How much power can you get out of a 24v on the street

Waiting for Don M's input here can I run anything bigger then your EDM 2's with the PDR 40 or will I need a bigger turbo before going more? I would really like to stay away from porting and cams and such because I know nothing about the internals and have no idea how to take my truck apart to do such things, injectors are about all I feel comfortable with.

Any guess as to what my RWHP will be with my current mods?

Jamie:

As I think you are probably aware, last year Doug Smith
(Jetpilot) made 764 H.P. with his 2001 Dodge CTD. That
was with a single charger, but also nitrous and propane.
As I recall, he made around 515 H.P. with just #2.
Hopefully he will see this and "correct me" if I am wrong
but I think the numbers are pretty close.

Hope this helps.

--------
John_P
