how much power?

i am looking to buy a 2001 24v with an auto. i was wondering how much of a power increase i can put to the stock auto with out blowing it up? the truck will be used mainly for DD just driving around town and to and from work. it will not be pulled or drag raced and will see limited towing duty, 1 or 2 times a year, pulling a boat or bobcat. im just looking to incease the smoke a little.

the trannys are strong and very reliable . if you keep up on PM and fresh oil ( synthetic) it willl last a long time. almost all my trucks are 300HP+- and I havent had any problem with 100s of 1000s on miles . if you drive normal 95% of the time it should last a long time. my $.02

The 47RE has some issues, and some upgrades are a good idea before adding a bunch of power - I think Big Blue (?) is running 400HP with just a VB (I may be wrong, there)....
